exactly. my parents did not get to where they are today by stupid financial strategies like bouncing checks. my mother is a finance major and keeps a tight hold on their budget which allows them to buy everything they need and most everything they want. my family isn't rich by most standards, but they do very well because of solid money management.

My mom doesn't have a resume like that, her entire work experience consists of 2 years of teaching elementary school, but she is from a great family, had an amazing husband and is at smart enough to have a brilliant Beverly Hills Jew manage her money. I love her!

ETA: And she is rich by almost any standard and even though she loves me to death she has never given me anything and never will while she is alive, which is cool with me because I would just blow it and I am able to get by on my own.

my mom has never come close to being the bread winner, but she's always be on top of things financially for my family because of her background. we went through some tough times growing up, but for the most part, my dad has always provided for us by himself, and has been rewarded for it now with a phenomenal job he got a couple years ago. they've got more than enough for themselves when they retire because she's always been on top of things. plus everything they've given to my brother and me in our adult lives has been/is being paid back to them in full. my mom keeps a tab of EVERYTHING

Tell me about it! We have family car insurance and cell phone bills to save money and I pay her on the 15th of each month. If I am ONE day late she starts BLOWING me up even though she has a paid off house in Scottsdale, a paid off beach house in San Diego and a couple mil in the bank. It drives me crazy!

I just sold my house and once I got the money from it, I paid off my truck then my mom said "write me a check for $xxx for x y and z"

I couldn't argue so I just said "yes mother"

My mom is 65 and is so worried she won't have enough money to last her the rest of her life even though she makes more than she spends each year, and ALL she does is vacation and live a true OT baller life. She is so out of touch of reality when it comes to money but god bless her! Like I said if I am ONE day late she will tell me how badly she needs the money because she has her bills due!

OP is tarded.

My parents goal:
Leave me with more money and property than they received.

My goal:
Leave my children with more money and property than I received.

One can travel and spend while accumulating wealth.

OP is tarded.

Think the point is "you can't take it with you". Why work all your life and not enjoy it, what's the point in that? Why would kids not want their parents who have provided for them, not to enjoy themselves. I understand the view of setting up your family for the future, but there is a lot more ways to do that than giving a pile of money when you die. IMHO if that's all you do, you haven't really set them up for anything successful. Most functioning normal people will make the same or more than their parents, if you haven't been taught to know what to do with it from there, the money they leave you won't be better than the lesson they should have taught you.

Different opinions, but neither is incorrect depending upon individual circumstances. Think I did a pretty good job with the kids. They are on their own, in the early stages of building successful careers and trained well enough to be planning for retirement early. I invested in their future, providing an education & exposing them to much of life's different experiences, socially & professionally. I am secure in the thought that they will need nothing I can or will leave behind.

So that allows me to go forward and enjoy the twilight of this journey. I will drink freely of life's wine, and when my time is over, turn over an empty glass.

I do t know why people can't do both? Enjoy your retirement and have a little left over, maybe in an education trust for the grand kids.

OP is correct, but for wrong reason. People should move all assets before they die to avoid inheritance taxation as much as possible

Perfectly planned finance. This should be everyone's goal.

I'm gonna give mine to my heirs before I die. This "disown them all" and rack up some hella debt on credit I got when I was rich. Then die. May even commit some crimes. Will definitely frequent prostitutes and go in bareback. I mean, what's to lose? I'm planning on being bad grandpa.

Working in the health care, it's an absolute travesty how often I see kids go cheap on their parent's (who have obvious money) care in the final years to preserve their inheritance. Few things truly piss me off more.

Definitely not from silver spoons but I think this is retarded as well...

It's not about the money. She wants you to be financially responsible. Good woman.
