Each probably making $85k

Hopefully there are many times more taxpayers than criminals. If so, then you should expect the IRS to have more employees than the FBI. Try applying some common sense before making such silly observations.

I'm just so glad that the government puts more emphasis on the collection of taxes. God knows tax collection>public safety.

The biggest wtf is that the IRS needs more.
As someone else stated, there are man more tax payers than criminals.
The IRS is severely understaffed right now, which allows people to get away with more on their taxes. If the IRS was able to just catch 1% in fines and penalties, it would equate to billions of dollars of additional revenue.

Or could we possibly simplify the tax code and save money on less IRS employees? Maybe logic doesn't apply to government though?

My observation on this is taxes need to increase to pay the IRS employees. That's a WTF!

I'm not advocating zero taxes. I'm not that guy. Just make it more efficient.
I hate paying taxes, but I understand it's necessary.

Well there are 92 million Americans in the workforce, and 65 million Americans with criminal records...
And of those 92 million less than half pay any income tax...
One could argue there are more criminals than taxpayers
Yet there are more tax collectors than law enforcement. Makes sense.

There would still be hundreds of millions of tax returns filed every year in addition to the billions of information returns. Someone has to administer the tax system. Thinking the IRS can get by with fewer employees is wishful thinking. The type of work they are required to do may change, and that could result in some compensation savings, but the volume will not decrease substantially.

There should be no need to file a tax return. Flat tax everything and have it withdrawn pre-check. That would easily cut the IRS in half.

I agree with you that the number of returns would not decrease, but with a simplification of the code surely a simplification of their job would be achieved also. Simplify their job and you should be able to shorten the amount of time spent on each return. Wouldn't this equate to less total time spent doing their jobs? Which in turn would lead to less workers needed?
Run the government like you would a business.

Sounds like our out of control, expensive, mismanaged, ineffective, inefficient government!

Definitely a shitty situation.
Our tax system certainly should be reconstructed but those who proclaim that a "flat tax" would solve our problem largely don't know their asses from holes in the ground. A "flat tax" does very little to reduce income tax complexity because it's the measurement of income before application of a tax rate that's complex. We need a national sales tax (e.g. the Fair Tax Plan) rather than a flat tax.
eta: Mike Huckabee, for all his faults, understands the difference. Ben Carson doesn't.

I have heard of this (and other things like) and approve of the theory. I don't know enough to make a determination about the possibility of its real life implementation though.
