I just was told that there was a FEMA meeting in which they discussed requiring anyone who rebuilds to raise their house 1 foot above the 100 year flood elevation. Anyone hearing anything about that? Seems like that would pretty much ruin any area affected (including br).

Home elevation companies are about to start making bank if this is the case.

I fail to see how this would make a difference in some areas.

If only 12-13% of the flooded homes had insurance, and the cost I'm hearing is ~100k, then very few people could afford it.

I think this was the case in Vermillion parish after Rita as well.

First, like was previously said, how does that help in another event like this? Even if these houses were a foot higher, many of them still get several feet of water.
Second, how do you raise a house that is on a cement slab?
Finally, who does this apply to? Anyone that takes FEMA money? I mean, how do they manage to push that agenda?

Here is the problem I"m running into. I need bodies. My mom lives in Sherwood by Flannery. She is literally shell shocked. She is in her 70's. lost everything in one day. They have a couple of people helping them and the house is nearly gutted but they still have the kitchen to do. That means the cabinets have not yet been pulled as of yesterday when I left. Bathrooms haven't been gutted yet eitehr and yes, I know about the mold. I'm going down today with a commercial dehumidifier and industrial fans but I can't do it all by myself.
Just plain need help and frankly don't know where to go for it.
I'll be at her place at 3:00 tomorrow. I've got 3-4 friends coming to help so far. I'm sure that number will go up overnight.
If any posters want to help out Near Goodwood Blvd at Sherwood Forest post info on how i can contact you.
Edit: we are up to 10 people now.

I've seen a lot of people picking up appliances. I f you are handy you might be able to get them going after a little tlc, My dryer made noise on my first load and got hot to the touch and then after that it was fine. I guess it just had to work out the moisture in it.
My air conditioner went out yesterday after it was runing fine. My boyfriend and a neighbor got it going again. I needed a contactor. Thank goodness the neighbor is an electrician and had the exact part I needed! It wasn't so much for comfort but I need to keep the air going to retard mold growth, I have treated with mold spray and have fans and a/c going after pulling up the flooring. So far so good I hope.

I applied for Aid last Tuesday and have not heard anything. I guess that is normal? Are they REALLY going to inspect every home? i can't see how that is necessary. They know what neighborhoods flooded don't they?
I am a renter and not sure what to expect.

Had to put a sign out not to remove anything bc my insurance wants to see everything. My contents aren't even covered but possibly built in appliances.

You are going to hear a lot of stuff over the next few weeks about what FEMA is saying. Make sure you check all of it out before you believe third party gossip/rumors.
Yes, you can raise a house that is on a slab. If FEMA offers to pay to raise your house, jump on it, but for GOD sake get a reputable person to raise the house. If you have to pay the extra money to raise your house DO IT!
Don't make quick decisions and stay calm as you can. This is going to take some time.

If you live in EBR, this is already a requirement on any new construction permit. Base Flood Plus 1 foot

I was awarded some temporary--one month--renters assistance. Everything else is pending a fema inspection which has not been assigned to anyone.

I will say this board does provide a lot of useful information during a very stressful time for those involved; however, people that have no clue posting random info makes it difficult to process what is fact and what is just made up crap!
