Wasn't that explained at the beginning? There should be about 1,000 type II or III civilizations just in our galaxy that are likely millions of years older than ours and would've found us by now even without moving at the speed of light.

Good article.
My suspicion is that the filter is the ability to create weapons that do so much damage a species can't survive (nuclear weapons being just a starting point). Or a technology that results in an unintended disaster like the creation of a black hole. Also, I'd say there is simply no easy way to travel between the solar systems in spite of all our sci-fi movies..

All joking aside, I share your view that God's existence and alien life are not connected. What I find interesting is the vastness of the created order. When you look out there and think about all those galaxies referenced in the OP and the billions upon billions of stars that could support life and yet as far as we can tell there is not other higher life form, it just caused me to think of how much God loves us, in that he created such a vastness to encapsulate our existence. God created such an amazing order and yet humans are special. We are created in his image. The God I am referring to is the only God. He is creator God.

Ok now I know you're trolling.

We are barely able to explore our own solar system and have explored exactly fricking nothing of our own little galaxy, and that's what you're going to hang your hat on and say it's a fact "aliens" don't exist? And their lack of existence "proves" there is a god? And not just a god, but your god?

I've been saying this shite for years. I'm glad that someone else has as well, and put it more eloquently than I ever could.
The whole great filter things is one of the hardest parts to swallow, but is an exceptional train of thought for progress.
***Also, I'd never heard of this website, but it's pretty awesome.

I don't suscribe to the anthill theory. An ant doesn't recognize you as an intelligent being because its not intelligent. So, why try to communicate with an ant. Its a one way conversation. So, I'm in the zoo camp in that one.
Excellent read. I should be up all night now. Thanks.

Could it be as simple as the inverse square law?
Hitler televises his Nuremberg stuff in the 30s with x amount of power. The radio transmissions he used leave and get 1000 miles off of the planet. We know the power it should have there. But, when that transmission gets 2000 miles off of the planet, it's 1/4 as strong as it was 1000 miles off. Continue the progression and by the time the signal reaches the moon, it's roughly 0.0000153 times as strong as the original transmission (maybe. drunk math isn't reliable, but the concept stands). We picked it up during the moon shots because we knew exactly where to look and exactly what signal to look for. Now, imagine that signal floating out into the universe. It's not that the signal isn't there. It's that it is so fantastically diluted that it tends to get swamped by the background and nobody who could tease the signal out of the noise has any clue that there's a signal to be teased out of the noise in the first place.
Imagine that you're trapped at the bottom of Niagara Falls and nobody else knows you're there. You scream and you scream but no one finds you and you die down there because the people who could help can't hear you over the roar of the falls. If they would bring sophisticated equipment to bear, your frantic squeaking could be picked up and you'd be in a nice warm bed in 12 hours. However, the people with that technology never even think to point it in your direction because there's no reason to. Same idea as picking out a signal of life across the stars.
So, you live, you die, and you flash out all on your own planet for the same reasons I think we will live, we will die, and we'll flash out without ever making contact with ET.

interesting article. Advanced civilizations probably using a form of quantum entanglement for communication. We would have now way of being a part of that communication at this point. And then you have the whole dark matter/dark energy possibility in which our observable universe is only about 5% of what's actually there.

This stuff is fascinating. I believe our sample size is way, way, way too small though. If we were communicated with by an alien civilization it would have to be within the last few hundred years of our civilization. The sheer timing would have to be so amazing that they would've had to detect us when we were still evolving from goop given the vast distances and the speed with which electromagnetic radiation travels. If the standard for their communication is even EMR.
There are laws to the physical universe, many of which we have no idea exist. One of the other options is that galaxy level communication is not possible for varying reasons we cannot clearly understand yet. Much level interstellar travel. We have yet to break our solar system. (Excluding that probe close to pluto?)
I also have a feeling that the two scariest moments facing human history are the day we meet another civilization or the day we discover an abundant / unlimited energy source. (We will have way too much time on our hands.)

Great article OP
I believe the great filter happens early on and we aced that shite.
I am not sure which is scarier... being alone in the universe or having company.

Just like Moses told pharaoh, his name is "I AM THAT I AM"
the great "I AM"
the great "I AM"
