re: The fact that we have to have a "March for Science" is frightening

Science bad
Made up religions

Scientists are just another group that feels persecuted
Well, when you have a president that:
Puts a gag order on the EPA.
Goes from a renowned physicist to... Rick Perry for Dept of Energy.
Reverse years of environmental progress with a few strokes of a pen because not being able to pollute the environment is apparently bad for business.
Put emphasis on coal... fricking coal.
Propose to cut a massive chunk out of the National Institue for Health.
Things like that... it's easy to see why the scientific community is feeling "persecuted."

A very clearly biased blog. The author, ironically, highlights confirmation bias.
there is no way that you read that whole article in the time it took you to make this response
that and a comment about your confirmation bias with your response of "confirmation bias" adds a double layer of ironing

Please stop confusing what a bunch of college hippies are doing versus what an actual scientist is doing in a lab
those people attack "real science" and limit what "real science" can study, though
for a good example of a liberal who does "real science" and is attacked by progs, see: Gad Saad
and those "college hippies" are just being sheep to the academic elite i referenced, parroting the bullshite they're taught

It seems to me all the responses are a bunch of butt hurt towards the transgender movement. Pretty sure Neil Degrasse Tyson, Bill Nye et al aren't marching for that.
yeah...

Since some people conflate science with climate change and others reject the biology of the sexes. Science, as with this march, has become a political weapon. It is absurd. Also, Sociology isn't a science.
Scruffy took the words out of my mouth. Plus the sociology part I completely agree

Since when did science become the enemy

I hear that is how Edison got his inspiration.

in an objective setting, science is self-correctable, which is why it's such a great tool

Since when did science become the enemy?
When it became politicized. When an orthodoxy about numerous subjects that still have many unknown variables became required beliefs for any researcher to be considered acceptable.
When it became about millions in grants and researchers realized that studying global issues that could be catastrophized brought in more dollars than research into the glucose concentration preference of the Ruby throated humming bird during Spring in the Gulf South.
Don't act like even half of those "scientists" have anything but their own self-interests in mind with this march.

What a drama queen.
Science isn't under attack. Nye and Tyson are self promoting blowhards in this regard

Criticizing science for being a learning, changing thing that does not pretend to be omniscient and have all the answers upon first glance (like religion does) is absolutely the most ignorant and moronic thing ever, and I don't think that is an exaggeration.
Eta: also, just an aside, science told us literally thousands of years ago that the world is round. The Greeks were some impressive people.

It hasn't become an enemy
Just that today's society doesn't give a shot about basic science

Or, in a nonpessimistic, less bitchy way of looking at it, it proves that mankind is always learning about the universe.

So the earth was once flat but became round?
Regardless, this just wrong. Science is frequently evolving.

Hahaha holy shite is that a real tweet stating what they're marching for? If that really is the lost, do you think the OP knew that when he started this thread. I'm an engineer and have basically dedicated my entire career to STEM. If you think any of that bullshite is true science then you don't know jack shite about science.

on a meta level, i think you're missing this
if we talk about supporting "science" as this method/ideal, then that's one thing
you're being much more active in your support, though, and you're supporting current scientific results to justify your personal/political beliefs. just like, though science, we changed fundamental beliefs about our world (like it being round instead of flat), the data you rely upon as your current foundation also may face a similar change over time.
like i said, the fact that "science" (more specifically, some scientific results) has become political AND the fact that science faces some serious reproductability issues and fundamental biases in terms of the methods used and availability of review/publication, makes it very arrogant to take this position

In sociology, where the ratio is 44 to 1, a student is much likelier to be taught by a Marxist than by a Republican.
I'm sorry, I can't take the author seriously when he uses ridiculous buzzwords like "Marxist."

and Scruffy is a doctor and also a man of science in terms of education and profession
but, OP, a journalist or other media member, is in a position to lecture Scruffy on science

Science is nothing more than the systematic study of the physical world and predictions based on the results. Those predictions are often wrong because science grows and testing methods improve.
It's not anti science to question those outcomes. There's nothing sacred about science.

why?
i was taught by Marxists at LSU
for example, i only took one sociology class, but that instructor (he wasn't a prof) was certainly on the verge of Marxism in class (i can only imagine his private beliefs behind the veil of a classroom)
