It's not even designed to help you in the short term. Anyone who's considering starting it should realize that it doesn't really start working well for probably near 1-3 weeks. It's more of a "long term tone down" knob than an "emergent shut off switch."

On the OTC packet? Probably to make sure you're taking it right, not destroying your septum, and then if that + antihistamine (like Zyrtec or Claritin) isn't helping, there are some good Rx meds (antihistamine spray or combo steroid/antihistamine) as well as another oral med that has OK results with minimal side effects (monteleukast sodium or Singulair for the brand name version). Also, if your symptoms are >10 days or getting worse, you may benefit from antibiotic therapy. Lastly, since this is an OTC med that many will start without consulting a physician, lack of relief could be due to improper choice of drug- an evaluation may send you home with a different diagnosis or referral to ENT for surgical evaluation.

But to be honest, I haven't read the packet to know what timeframe it uses to refer you.

Combine Singulair with an antihistamine. I take that and Mucinex and I breathe VERY well despite allergy-induced asthma.

Great therapy choice, but if you're hesitant to go to a doctor first and want to try OTC stuff, Singulair isn't an option at present. I'd start with Flonase + antihistamine +/- mucinex for a month or so. If that doesn't work, then see your PCP for possibly adding an Rx med, like Singulair, nasal antihistamine, combo spray, or surgical evaluation.

I prefer Sudafed.

I don't have allergies, but I do smoke a ton of meth.

Because people are stupid and will just take shite for no reason. Seriously. Also, if your symptoms suck after that long, it may be that there is something else wrong with you, like an infection, deviated septum, or other issue that a doctor should take a look at. After the doctor confirms you are fine, you could probably take Flonase every day.

My nasal symptoms are minor most of the time. It's the burning, itching eyes that are getting to me.

These are all mainly preventatives. If you take them after your symptoms are really bad, they will likely do nothing as you possibly have a sinus infections and need a shot of something to feel better. I started taking Zyrtec a week before the pollen got really bad. Take 1 every 3 days now and I am good to go. The above works for me and I always seem to be affected worse than anyone I know.
