The Church of England's divorce rules don't make a lot of sense.

Can anyone clarify what the Church of England's rules are for divorce? I always thought they were cool with divorce and remarriage.
I've always been taught that they separated from the Catholic Church because King Henry VIII wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. However after watching The Crown on Netflix and then reading more about the monarchy, I learned that Edward VIII abdicated the throne in order to marry his lover, Wallis Simpson. The church wouldn't allow him to marry her because she was divorced, so he abdicated the throne.
Then the situation with Princess Margaret not being allowed to marry Peter Townsend because he was divorced. This situation was different from Edward VIII's because Peter Townsend was innocent in his divorce. His wife left him because he was never home due to spending all his time serving the royal family.
Most recently, Prince Charles divorced Princess Diana and was allowed to then marry Camilla Parker Bowles.
None of this makes any sense.

I'm pretty sure you're fine to divorce and remarry as long as you behead your wife.

Just chop your wife's head off and get another.

It always struck me that King Henry VIII missed out on a perfect comedy opportunity. He should have had his second wife Anne executed in a vat of scalding hot oil.
That way he could've walked by her casually as she was being killed And remarked, "Oh look. it's Anne...
Boilin'"

I think it had to do with Simpson's ex husband still being alive - both of her ex's actually.

That must have some damn fine pussy. Gave up the kingdom for it.

Henry did that to find a fertile womb and get out from under his brother's intended without fricking the alliance. Anne had just miscarried the prince because she hit the wall and Henry was eyeing up the ladies.
Wallis just wanted to be royalty, but "can't have a Queen that some bloke has been all up in." Her quest for a crown inadvertently made it easier for Britain to distance itself from Germany prior to WW2.
Margaret was Margaret.
Charles pretty much sealed the deal for never being King. But Dianna was crazy and he did his duty. "I refuse to be the first Prince of Wales without a mistress." Was a decently boss way to lay down the law.
It's much less what the CoE will take but more the public and Parliament.
Obligatory I had to talk about Princess Di

It might be semantics, but Henry VIII never divorced any of his wives; the unions were "annulled". Catherine due to Henry claiming that their union was an abomination (she was, in the eyes of his church, his sister due to her earlier marriage to his brother), and Henry and Anne of Cleves never consummated their marriage (still grounds for annulment to this day).
Also, in Henry's day, the monarch was far more powerful than they are today and he could act with relative impunity. As the monarchy gradually lost more and more of it's power and became a figurehead, it relied more on the pomp, circumstance, and dignity of the family. Any "proper" man would cause a disturbance to polite society if they married a divorcee in 1930's, and the family, the government, and the church would not allow it as a blight on the House. It was the same for Princess Margaret. Prince Charles' divorce and re-marriage has more to do with the public's attitude towards divorce now, than anything else.
