We have a radiologist in the family, and this person tells of how reimbursement has been cut about 40% from what it was 7-8 yrs ago.

I think these numbers are low for many of the specialties.

These reports are always flawed.

Between the rapid advancement in heuristic AI and the inevitably of a single payer system in America, the role of a physician is going to become greatly diminished - which will lead to a precipitous drop in those numbers in the decades ahead.

Yep. AI diagnosis is a discussion people have ignored for far too long.

Radiology has been hit hard by reimbursement, but they still do really well. Medicine simply cannot function without imaging and its utilization is constantly growing. Surgeons won't operate without it, cancer cannot be monitored without, etc.

You probably mostly know physicians in Louisiana where they tend to make more than those in big coastal cities.

My friend who's a radiologist started out at $700k/yr and I doubt he's ever taken a pay cut.

ETA: I could be wrong, I don't ask him. The first figure just came out of his decision on where to live...the numbers just were part of it.

in the next few decades, AI is going to start playing a major role in all sorts of professional services

i'm a lawyer and i see the writing on the wall. we're in large part going to be obsolete very shortly

Physicians are being targeted from numerous positions - mid-levels that want increasing autonomy and will accept less money; heuristic AI systems that can diagnose far more quickly and efficiently than a physician, and can access 100% of all medical knowledge at all times, and can seamlessly implement new data into novel medical contexts; and the inevitably of a single payer system, which will mean that physicians will subsist monetarily on medicaid and medicare payments.

The salaries will take an irrevocable nosedive in the near future before the position is ultimately diluted into more of a passive overseer of the clinic.

I've been hearing this since I first read it Michael Crichton book back in the 1980s.

They don't list neurosurgery or cardio thoracic because they'd break the scale.
