Texas police dept tries to calm people about new open-carry gun law

Starting Friday, properly licensed Texans will be allowed to carry handguns openly in the Lone Star State, and Texas law enforcement agencies are preparing for some misunderstandings. Seeking to avert a flood of 911 calls from people surprised to see handguns in restaurants and stores and unable to tell the "bad" guys from the "good," the Round Rock Police Department released this public-service announcement: LINK
The PSA is a good idea, and there's some sound advice here — if a person with a handgun is "acting reckless" or waving said gun around, you should call 911, stat — but a few notes. First, the grandfatherly holster-wearing white gentleman is buying cheap red wine at a convenience store, which actually is a little suspicious. Second, Round Rock is an affluent suburb of Austin and the home of Dell — it would be surprising to hear such a thick Texas accent anywhere in the town. Finally, Round Rock is 10 percent black, 29 percent Latino, 5 percent Asian, and 13.5 percent foreign-born, according to Census data; by not noting the elephant in the room — brown and black people will also be allowed to open-carry, too — the Round Rock police department all but ensures that come Jan. 1, its 911 operators will be very busy fielding calls from concerned citizens.

I love the sheer horror on the moms face at the sight of the gun. It's really sad the the general public isn't educated enough on firearms to realize they don't suddenly animate and start blasting off rounds.

So is this more race-baiting or just another example of Moon Moon journalism?
Posted on 1/1/16 at 10:28 am to GeauxxxTigers23
They are assuming that racist white people will call 911 every time they see a black/brown person carrying a weapon.

But that's what they do. Guns are like snakes. They slither around and just wait to strike and then it's 1000s upon 1000s of bullets flying everywhere.

Over/under for number of days before something stupid happens? I say 1.5.
Some moron carrying something extra cool (vintage) shooting himself in the leg?
Kingwood already had (4-5 years ago) a CHL guy have his derringer slip out of his slacks pocket, hit the ground, and gut shot some old lady?
Are there restrictions on what you can carry? Meaning needed modern safety features? I see a lot of Tombstone enthusiasts "skinning their smoke wagons" on the doors of their cars or jackets, and capping their own thighs.
I may get a CHL one day, but open carry just ain't for me. I don't want bad guys knowing what I have?

Millions of people conceal carry everyday and you had to reach back 5 years to come up with an example of something bad happening. I bet somebody in Texas has died in the last hour from not wearing a seat belt.

Louisiana has had open carry forever. Pretty unremarkable. Sorry Texas is a liberal nanny state.

I don't even think you need a license to open carry in Louisiana.
Frankly it's stupid to require a license to conceal carry. It's really nothing more than a money grab.

Some folks, mainly reporters, act like this is some big deal. Open carry has been legal in many states, including Louisiana, for decades with no permit needed, but you rarely see anyone doing it.
Allowing Texans with permits to open carry, when most of them will not choose to do so, is going to be a big non-event.
I'm sure there will be a few attention whores who will strap on and go to the local McDonalds or wherever the TV cameras are for the first week or so, then it will settle down to nothing.

quote:Correct. Although I had a BRPD officer once tell me a license was needed for open carry in East Baton Rouge Parish. I suggested he contact his department's compliance/legal adviser. He left me alone after that.

Only need a license in Louisiana for concealed carry.

I would never have thought you couldn't open carry in Texas.

It means some weak people want so bad for open carry to be an issue that they are making up fake hysteria.
These people have mid to low level jobs, they have failed every time they have taken on any small semblance of responsibility and they rely on the government to tell them what to do.
Nothing will happen in Texas. Open carry will be a non-story.

Did they have to look under the tumbleweeds to find the dumbest, most hick sounding narrator to do that PSA?
