A 6 may have a higher resale value because more people want it.

I had a two door Ford Ranger with a four cylinder years ago. It was the slowest vehicle I have ever driven. Scary trying to enter highway traffic even with a manual transmission. You will regret buying the four cylinder no matter how cheap.

Buy the six cylinder

I'd buy the 6 banger while you still can. At some point in the future 6 and 8 bangers will be extinct.

Thank the EPA.

OP, I dont know if this has been mentioned, but the only real complaint would be resale value. Tacos hold their value EXTREMELY well, but finding someone in LA who wants a 4cyl and no 4x4 will be hard to get maximum value. Look at it from an investment standpoint. Dump a little more now and get a 6cyl + 4x4 for top asking price later.

Are you driving in hilly areas? If you ever do need to tow something that weighs more than a lawnmower, you will miss 6cyl. I have a 2008 Tacoma w/ the 6cyl and get roughly 22 mpg I believe - a lot of it is short drives. I have towed a 20' boat with no problems and a loaded U-Haul trailer from Pensacola to NY with no problems (even in the hilly/mountainous regions)... I mean, you may need your man card revoked but if you don't plan on towing or hauling stuff then you should be ok.

I have the lower-end engine/model and can go most places with it with pretty good highway, and great backroad milage.

I had a 4 door 4 cylinder Tacoma and I wish I still had it. Wife wanted me to get a bigger truck for the kids. I never had a problem with that Tacoma, once the kids are out of car seats I'll probably buy another one.

So spend a lot more money upfront to potentially get a little more money on the back end? I hope you don't give investment advice for a living.

OP, I wouldn't buy a 4 cyl Tacoma because it will be extremely slow. Couple that with the fact that you aren't getting much more efficiency for the lack of power, and it's a no brainer for me. IF you don't care about that kind of stuff though, a 4 cyl will suit you just fine.

I love how people on here act like the truck is a frickin turtle.

I mean you aren't go to win drag races or dominate that ricer to the stoplight, but the truck is plenty capable of accelerating at a normal rate. Basically unless you drive like a complete asshat like I suspect many people in this board do, you will be fine with the 4 cylinder. Drove one for years, normal driving is just fine with this truck. Engine is super reliable too. Get what you want.

It's just that the payoff in terms of fuel efficiency isn't enough to justify sacrificing 110 hp and driving a frustratingly, perhaps even dangerously slow vehicle.

A whopping 2 mpg advantage for going from 278 to 159 hp? That's a bad deal.

I essentially is. It's barely faster than a Prius. The trade off in power is not worth at most 2 additional mpg for me.

Yea, that must be it. No matter that a more powerful car makes pretty much all movements in traffic much easier and safer, it must just be because we're all asshats.

Not everyone wants "just fine."

If you feel this way, why the need to act superior to those who want the additional power? Or does "get what you want" only go one way?

Get the 6. The 4 is extremely slow. I wouldn't get the 4 unless you are hellbent on stick shift.

I own a 6 and wouldn't want any less pickup. I don't remember the gas savings to be too significant

My 6 barely gets 15 mpg, but the rated efficiency is lower for the manual transmission...I have bigger tires and I like gassing it when shifting through the gears.

Thread needs pitchers.

For you is the key.

bullshite, if you cant drive safely and make the same movements in normal traffic, you are either a shite driver or drive like an a-hole. This is someone who has spent a lot of money on driving and riding schools.

Perfectly acceptable, but pretending the truck isn't fully capable of meeting expectations of normal traffic is garbage.

The guy isn't asking about a bigger engine, he is asking about the 4 cyl. If he was asking about the 6, I would say the same. Get what you want.
