tell me why I should avoid buying a 4 cylinder Tacoma

So you know I'm not truck savvy much less engine savvy. I'm ready to trade in my Accord and get a 2017 crew cab Tacoma, Engine: Regular Unleaded I-4 2.7 L/164, to be precise. I don't own a boat or trailer that I'll be towing around. If I'm hauling anything it will be no more than a few hundred pounds. Most of the miles I'll put on the truck will be highway.
Is this truck to much for the engine? I'll be financing on a simple interest loan hoping to have the truck all paid off within 3 years. I'm also hoping to keep the truck for at least a decade.

Beta's gunna Beta. What do you have against getting laid?

Nothing wrong with that engine/truck combo for what you described.
EDIT: The 2016 EPA ratings give the I4 two whole more MPGs than the V6 in the Tacoma. The difference in HP is 159 to 278 between the two engines. With that further information, I'd lean more towards the V6 but, again, the I4 will be fine for what you stated you'll do (and not do) with it.

If you want four wheel drive, you might just want to get a V6. If not, the I4 should be just fine.

I would go with the Leaded gas engine if you can.

Don't get an access cab or a crew cab with the 4 cyl. It's slow as hell. Even when not pulling. Just get the 6. Seriously. I'm thinking about a single cab with the 4 but don't get the crew cab.
The 6 cyl engines make just as good mileage in the 4 doors and pull twice as much.

Too much truck, not enough engine. You'll regret not going with a 6 cyl.

Based off of the aforementioned, you have NO reason to spend more and get a larger engine.
Buy the 4 cyl, no doubt. Toyotas will out-last you, nowadays. Get it, seriously. Even if you regret it, it will have pretty good resale value.

I've had both. The 4 is slow and you need to absolutely floor it to make evasive actions, etc. at speed. MPG was slightly better.

You'll shoot your eye out.

I've got an extended cab with the 4 and it won't pull hills on the interstate for shite. That's the only time I hate it being 4 cylinder.

Because a real ot baller would get a tundra

Wouldn't touch a 4 cyl crew cab. You'll feel like you're driving a '98 Honda Civic and be constantly frustrated with the lack of power.
Cruise control becomes essentially useless, as it will have to jump into high RPM to maintain speeds on the interstate.

An access cab with the I-4 and an automatic will be pretty slow. The last 4 cylinder Tacoma I drove was pretty wheezy on the freeway. Seems like it needed another 25 horsepower at least. They only put out about 160 horsepower.
IMO Toyota's 4 cylinder Tacoma is not competitive.
If you want a 4 cylinder truck, try the Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon. They have another 40 horsepower over the Tacoma, which is pretty significant. I think they have a 6 speed manual option as well. 200 horsepower engine vs 159 horsepower engine.....not much of a comparison.
Give the 2.5L Colorado or Canyon a test drive. If you don't like it, no harm. Base price of $21,000 is a pretty decent work truck.

Grades and cruise control aren't a factor in NOLA.

Just curious here, sounds like you don't really have a need for a truck, if you're not going to be towing anything or really hauling anything, why not just get another accord that will get better mpg for all those hwy miles? I would imagine the 4 banger in the truck would be awfully slow for passing people on the interstate. Either way best of luck.

My buddy pulled a 19' fiberglass boat all over South LA with a Ranger with a 4 banger. That's enough engine unless you live in the Mountains. On flatland you'll be fine.
