Crescent City Grill I think the name is. It's the one attached to the Purple Parrot.

I went to college in Ruston for undergrad, so I know what those types of colleges and college towns have to offer.
It's honestly kind of a cool melting pot, I guess a little less cliquish than BR bars tend to me. People tend to know each other. Could be that I'm always on vacation when I'm there and more friendly, but despite it being a mix of hipsters, frat boys, and hood stars I always seem to interact with more people and have a good time.

Kinda surprised no one has mentioned Keg & Barrel, it's Hattiesburg's version of the bulldog with better food. The music scene is kind of eclectic since USM is a liberal arts school. There's a pretty big hipster population for a MS city. Downtown has some nice restaurants, but there are a lot of chains everywhere else. Honestly, having spent a lot of time in both, I see it as a shrunken version of BR, traffic and all.
The main appeal is you have decent, though not great, entertainment in the city but you're also a short drive from the outdoor recreational things you mentioned as well as New Orleans. Another perk is that safe, decent housing is cheap and the run down areas tend to be pretty well defined. Avoid anything immediately east or south of downtown, that's where the two cops were shot last year. West Hattiesburg is the yuppie box store side of town, and most of what I enjoy is gonna be on the strip of Hardy Street between I59 and downtown.
Great summary. I grew up in BR and then spent my college years in Hattiesburg and I would completely agree. My suggestions,
Food:
Cotton Blues
Crescent City/Purple Parrot
T-Bones is a small record store that actually has fantastic sandwiches
The Endzone (diner food, similar to Louie's in BR)
Winged It (take out only but by far the best wings you'll find within several hours drive)
Outdoor:
Along with De Soto and the Trace, there's Paul B. Johnson about half an hour outside of town. It has a decent little lake, campsites, and a 27-hole disc golf course.
There's 3 pretty nice golf courses (Timberton, Canebrake, and Shadow Ridge). Timberton is the best layout, Canebrake the best maintained, with Shadow Ridge the best priced.
Tatum Park has tennis and 18 holes of disc golf
Nightlife:
Keg and Barrel is my favorite place. As Drukentigah said, it's very similar to the Bulldog in BR. Relaxed and great beer selection, albeit sometimes hipster heavy
Mahogany Bar is more upscale if you're looking to avoid the hipster crowd
Roper's if country music and line dancing is your thing
Nick's Ice House is a hilarious dive bar that only sells beer and has toilet seats for bar stools

Leatha's BBQ (RIP - Applehead)
Crescent City Grill
Mughshot's (pizza burger... mmmmmm...)
My sister and her family live just outside Petal (brother-in-law's family is from there). Aside from eating and watching football, there's not a whole helluva lot to do (thus my list).

I used to deliver to the big Walmart in Hattiesburg. Very nice talent.

Besides the Golf Courses and Lethea's BBQ, not much other than USM there.

Live here now
Keg and Barrel for craft beer, good burgers
Crescent City/Mahogany Bar for a relaxed atmosphere, good food
Patio 44 fits that mold too
Brewskys if you want to get wild with college kids
Leathas for some of the best BBQ in the southeast
Thirsty Hippo for live music with a hipster crowd
Bianchis downtown for good pizza
Sullys probably has the best burger in town at the south Hattiesburg exit
Donnanelle's for a good steak down by camp Shelby
Decent little town, lots of hipsters and SJWs though. Avoid 98 west if possible, traffic is a nightmare.

No, Shadow Ridge is a shithole. But its like $30. I havent seen one single bunker that didnt have grass or puddles in it in probably 7 or 8 years.

I'm down. Keg will start doing crawfish boils soon. They did away with the back yard and have laid stone down back there, looks like they plan to put a tin roof up too, so that'll hopefully turn into a cool little concert venue with an amphitheater feel

Let's do it, brah

I agree but it only costs $25. I expect to get what I pay for.
