I was born and raised in West Philadelphia. Spent a lot of time out on the playgrounds with my buddy's just hanging out, and relaxing, playing basketball. Just like everywhere else though, the neighborhood went to hell. I got in one fight and just like that, my mom sent me to live with my aunt and uncle in California.

It's pretty rough but it has all the cultural amenities you could ask for. It's a world class city in some ways, you just have to be ready for some seriously bad elements.

Geno's is better than Pat's. They booed Santa Clause. Since Scarfo went down it has not been the same.

What side of the city? If you can commute easily from the mainline burbs (US30, 'spensive) or from the southwest, Chester County. Beautiful area.

Not surprised it's getting all this heat, but I visited about a month ago and found it surprisingly nice.

A friend lives 1 mile outside the city limits in a neighborhood that is still relatively safe.

Driving through Philadelphia, with the doors locked, it's easy to appreciate the superb stone work that went into building so many beautiful homes. Concentrate on what was, and ignore the dead cars in the front yards, the falling off shutters, the boarded up windows, the wood frames of the doors and windows rotting.

We were driving around one Saturday afternoon, and my husband wasn't being all that careful. I said "would you drive through the Florida projects this slowly and distractedly on a Sat afternoon?" That got his attention, we did a U-turn and went back to the burbs.

There's wonderful history there. Bartram's Farm where so many famous botanists walked across the same threshold you can walk across. Getting there, you get to see a really good selection of bars on windows and doors, all windows and doors.

There are actually a lot of really nice areas and it's pretty affordable as far as Northeast/Mid-Atlantic cities are concerned.

There's something for everyone there. Phillies/Eagles fans are obnoxious and there is a large amount of white/union/old school Irish/Italian folks and also plenty of shitty areas.

When you know what areas to avoid and make it a point to get to know the city...it's not that bad

So, there is a possibility that living in Philly would make my job a whole lot easier. Any of you have experience with the city? Things to do, housing market, the area as a whole, etc. Thanks in advance

I have been twice for work conferences. I visited the historical landmarks and stayed downtown both times. I didn't like it, but that's me. If I got transferred there, I would begin looking for another job. I visited late February, early March.

OP,
If you're born and raised in S.LA then you will find the people in Philly to be the closest thing to the polar opposite of ppl in LA.

Closed off, too cool for school, impatient, and will cuss you out in the quickest

Has All 4 major sports teams if your into that and it has its good/bad areas just like any other big city

Food is good not great

GFs family lives in the Jersey suburbs and it's beautiful where they live (Newfield/Vineland) because you get all 4 seasons unlike down here.

The worst fans of any city in the country too. Bring extra batteries when you go to Eagles games.

Idk how you got 8 upvotes

New Orleans and Philly only are similar in that they both have a lot of crime and an NFL team

It's not as bad as people make it sound. Great bar and restaurant scene. I've always described it as NYC without the pretentiousness and price. Manayunk/Roxborough is a solid/affordable part of town. Fishtown and Nothern Liberties have undergone a resurgence and, last I knew, the hot place to live. Similar to the CBD/Warehouse District in NOLA right now.

If you want an actual house, head out toward King of Prussia area. You'll be about a 30/40 minute drive into the city, but it's pure suburbia. Oh, and if you're a true OT baller...then the Main Line or Villanova is your place.
