Jim's on South St. shites on both of them and Nino's in Horsham shites on Jim's. Seriously, the best cheesesteaks are in the suburbs of Philly.

Which, OP, is where you want to live if moving to the Philly area. I lived in Horsham/Hatboro area for 3+ years. Philly is great to visit, especially for food, booze, and American history, but frick living there. The people aren't that bad, just opinionated and loud with their opinions. Lots of bars, since getting drunk is about the only thing keeping locals from jumping in front of SEPTA trains because of their sports teams, local politics, and their own drivers. The drivers. I-95 through Philly is one of the few places that gives I-65 through B'ham a run for its money on shitty drivers and traffic delays due to broken down vehicles and wrecks. Winters aren't that bad, they do a good job with the snow clearing and salting the roads but you better own a truck and put on good tires, new shocks, and get some underbody coating for it. You'll never be bored in Philly, but you'll be much happier living north of it and just going in to visit.

. "The City of Brotherly Love", what a joke. I'm guessing some guy was passing through town, he was wearing a shirt they didn't like, they ganged up on him and kicked his arse as a group, and as he left the bar he sarcastically said "this is the city of brotherly love", and the mother frickers were dumb enough to think he was serious and made it their nickname

There was a ton of black Muslims last time I was there - dressed in full regalia and everything that comes with it (constant scowl, body odor, awkward interaction with normal Americans, etc.). I hadn't noticed them before so not sure if this is a change in the last few years or if I was just in a different area on previous trips.

I wouldn't describe it as that at all. Those a-holes have tons of pretentiousness when it comes to their city and will fight anyone who remotely demeans it in their eyes.
if those are the people you're hanging around while in Philly that says more about you

It's super easy to avoid that stuff

That's what kind of crazy people live in Philly.
it sounds like you started it by not STFU while in a city with completely different bar/sports culture than the South

I'm not reading all this bullshite. I live here in Philly. There are bad parts (all of North Philly, parts of West and parts of South). However, Old City and Queen Village are incredibly nice and unique and beautiful. Center City is very nice, too. Philadelphia has a stigma because of Northwest and Northeast Philly, but you won't go there unless you're a degenerate.

I love this city, and I don't really plan on going anywhere for a while. It's extremely liberal, but it's mostly just ignorance and you turn a blind eye.

Pittsburgh would be a great place to live and raise a family. Completely different from Philly. Pittsburgh people have more of a Midwestern sensibility whereas Philly are east coast assholes.

I would agree with 90% of this. I've been here since 1999 and moved from LSU via a very short stint in Houston. I've lived in MontCo, Berks, Center City, and now Bucks. The only thing I wouldn't agree with is that it's "extremely" liberal. I think the extremists tend to get the microphone but there are a lot of conservatives who, like you say, turn a blind eye.

There are good parts and bad parts, like everywhere. Winter sucks. College basketball is great here. College football not so much. I can go to the mountains in 2 hours, shore in 90 minutes, and downtown in 40 minutes and have very different experiences in each one. Public school system in Bucks is 2nd to none. I will stay here until my kids graduate then snowbird.

Alternative NE options:

1. Wilmington, DE
2. Pittsburgh, PA
3. Annapolis, MD

Assuming your job is in Philly, like the OP said, then Pittsburgh and Annapolis are not options. That's like saying you are being transferred to work in Baton Rouge but look for housing in Houston or Vicksburg, MS. Not exactly close.

BUT, I do agree that Annapolis would be a great place to live.
