It doesn't... I have nearly every social media platform out there but rarely use any. It's amazingly refreshing to turn a blind eye to all of the BS everyone gets so stressed out about. Even better is to have no knowledge of it whatsoever. It's awesome.

I saw a video the other day of this old redneck lady with a shotgun about to shoot her kids iphone... She said "I DENOUNCE SOCIAL MEDIA" and BOOM!! Shoots the phone.

Of course the whole thing was videoed with an iphone so she could put it on social media.

You're right, but not because it makes people stupid; it has ruined society because it has allowed stupid people to thrive and survive where they would have perished young or never been born in the first place.

That's a symptom, not the disease. Technology combined with both men and women working around the world has made the economy so insanely productive that we have too much free time. Sure social media is training too many people to seek attention, but it's also teaching them how to do other things with their spare time like cook, craft, brew beer, garden, etc. Technology isn't ruining society, people are ruining society, which is the way it's always been.

The real problem is that we pay attention (or seem to) to those voices and attention seekers.

Also, the penalty for "offending someone" has become ridiculous.

Some racist moron screams racial slurs at a woman and it draws a written statement of concern from the bank about ATM safety and their commitment to safety. But, their ATM customers had been robbed a number of times, and there was no "ATM safety" press release.

The "refused to bake a cake" governmental fine is a good example. $144,000. I have been involved in OSHA cases where employees were killed or seriously injured, and the fine wasn't close to $144,000.

How do you know technology causes the effects you are talking about? It could be that people have always been that way and social media just give them a way to express themselves.

That's the thing. For most people it doesn't. Most people watch or read this stuff, then move on, put their phone down, and live their lives. It only exists on the internet. It has no effect on my life at all.

People always wanted attention, but didn't have a means to get it easily or were too afraid to try to get it in person. Social media provided the medium for attention whores and created giant knitting circles for trashy people to spread their idiotic ideas.

I think it's great and horrible at the same time. Sharing thoughts and ideas, without the boundaries of geography is pretty awesome. But, at the same time, people now think their opinions are worth more than they really are.

The absolute worst is people who have no aptitude for politics constantly posting about it based on what they've seen posted on their "Being Liberal" of "Conservative Memes" Facebook pages. While the internet has greatly increased the access to information for those that otherwise would find it inaccessible except through a specifically tailored educational path, thus creating a smarter and more knowledgeable person, it has also made it one hundred times easier to manipulate the less informed and less critically minded masses with single idiotic memes. It is a double edged sword to be sure.

True enough. Technology, (until it evolves to a malignant form of A.I.), is neutral. What matters is what people do with the technology that is available. Like social media, being but one example. One day, when there is a meltdown of all power grids, people will need to re-learn how to actually interface with other people (socialize in person), without emoticons and all the web slang, wisecracks and jargon to hide behind. Plus there will be actual, printed media to hold and read (called books), that need no charging to open and won't run out of power in the middle of a great chapter.

Which isn't anything new. They just now have a bigger platform. I don't really see what the big deal is. People have always bitched and moaned about something.

That's the funny thing with political sites/blogs and 9,000 cable/radio channels - you'd think the exchange of information would lead to really solid discourse, but instead people just retreat to their echo chamber and recite talking points. As ugly as the poliboard is here, at least people are forced to somewhat consider the other side. In some ways, there was probably better debate when the few MSM media outlets would bring in one guy on the right and one guy on the left. If nothing else, though, the internet has at least trained us to understand the concept that is cliche at this point -- the politicians on each side are in bed together.
