It sounds to me like a bunch of billionaires are enjoying living their lives too much they're afraid of death and losing it all. I personally think it would be pretty cool.

SO when can i start flying like Neo?

If you are interested in listening to a thorough discussion on the idea of the universe being a simulation check out this LINK
The Iranian(I think that is her nationality) scientist is a little to understand but I believe she is suggesting that there may be a way to test the limits of the universe's "RAM" so to speak, if there is a limit.

ARE YOU LIVING IN A COMPUTER SIMULATION?

ABSTRACT
This paper argues that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. It follows that the belief that there is a significant chance that we will one day become posthumans who run ancestor-simulations is false, unless we are currently living in a simulation. A number of other consequences of this result are also discussed.

VII. CONCLUSION
A technologically mature “posthuman” civilization would have enormous computing power. Based on this empirical fact, the simulation argument shows that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) The fraction of human-level civilizations that reach a posthuman stage is very close to zero; (2) The fraction of posthuman civilizations that are interested in running ancestor-simulations is very close to zero; (3) The fraction of all people with our kind of experiences that are living in a simulation is very close to one.
If (1) is true, then we will almost certainly go extinct before reaching posthumanity. If (2) is true, then there must be a strong convergence among the courses of advanced civilizations so that virtually none contains any relatively wealthy individuals who desire to run ancestor-simulations and are free to do so. If (3) is true, then we almost certainly live in a simulation. In the dark forest of our current ignorance, it seems sensible to apportion one’s credence roughly evenly between (1), (2), and (3).
Unless we are now living in a simulation, our descendants will almost certainly never run an ancestor-simulation.

Don't break us out, I don't want eat that mush and live in a sewer

If this is true, then please leave me in the matrix. I like the deal I got.

If we're in the matrix then why doesn't the programmer write code to keep them from attempting to break out?

This is actually a little different. Brain in a vat still gives the experiencer one leg in actual reality with the physical brain. This assumes that there is nothing about us that exists in a real world, we're all simply code being run on a program.
I might be splitting hairs here, but I the distinction is significant.

I had some random thoughts recently that are somewhat related to this topic. If I were fully convinced that we were in a matrix simulation but did not know any further details, would I change any part of my life? Perhaps this simulation determines whether we have it within us to make continual improvement and reach enlightenment within our 'real lives'.
If it were proven that every person I experience in this simulated life was just my own creation and not 'real', I'm not sure that I would change much because I love my family and friends so much. For example, I wouldn't just walk out the door on my kids because I would miss them (even though they would not be 'real').

Maybe the desire was never too keep us contained. Maybe this is an incubator of consciousness designed to let us develop to the point where we could get out. An egg.

Perhaps because breaking out of one matrix will land you in another matrix. The idea is there are matrixes within matrixes within matrixes because AI will eventually create AI which will eventually create AI.
It's the simulation version of Inception, except each level of dreamscape is actually a separate simulation.

If we were in a matrix, and you were a billionaire, why would you want out? I think I'd want to keep the status quo, since I somehow accessed a cheat code.

This is what happens when you have no real problems, folks.

fwiw, a few have escaped the Matrix. Jesus Christ to name one...
