If it will keep them from banging the kids, I'm for it.

Teacher/coach here, and I hate when peeps post crap like that. Love my job, and knew exactly what I was getting into when I decided Econ wasn't going to make me happy.

And as it goes with any profession, you've got everyone from the cream of the crop, to the shitebirds who do as little as possible and show up just collecting a check.

It's hard for me to have sympathy. My profession requires a college degree but the starting pay is significantly less than a starting teacher's pay, it only has 2 weeks vacation and normally 0 holidays (although we get paid extra or an extra vacation day if we work a holiday), and right now I'm working the overnight shift. Also, much like teachers, our salary doesn't go up much over the course of time. I'll be lucky if I hit 65k when I retire.

Both of my parents are teachers and they'll admit to having it pretty darn good all things considered. Should they be paid more? Absolutely because it's a hard thankless job that requires many hours outside of work and without them our society is fricked. Should they be making the kind of money they expect to make? Hell no.

Well, they're addressing the legislators, not the common man. They're completely right about this.

Nah man. I love what I do. (Plus I'm marrying a woman that makes real money so I don't have to worry about it). I'm just saying teachers don't have it as bad as they want to make it seem.

Just giving you a hard time. Can never fault a man for doing what he loves, I've been in that position many times despite objections from others.

Or doing all of the above while also having shingles.

I have!

Interesting enough, I was a teacher for a great many years in the most challenging schools (by choice) with the crappiest administration and a complete lack of suitable supplies but I loved my job and did not mind spending my money to buy supplies to run my class to my expectations.

Years after I retired from teaching I worked as a roofer with my husband bro in law doing roofs in September in the brutal heat (after hurricane Gustav). Despite the broiling heat, the exhausting conditions and me being a petite female doing a job usually done by a stronger man, I was damn good at it.

Our customers were amused to learn that I was a retired teacher who was now doing roofing jobs and one inquired of my BIL if he was paying me as much as I would make as a teacher. He replied " Is she gonna teach those shingles to read?"

I just cracked up laughing. He paid me well and despite the heat and brutal conditions at times, I love being up on a roof and experiencing all types of jobs.

I taught high school for 2 years several years ago, and the people who constantly rag on teachers really have no idea just how stressful and demanding it can be. Of course it's not physically difficult, but it is extremely stressful and emotionally and mentally draining. I worked at a private Christian school, so I had it way better than public school teachers relative to behavior. But I made 23k/year. I've often said it was both the best and worst job I've ever had. It could be extremely fulfilling at times, but ultimately the little shits who didn't give a frick combined with the shite pay didn't work for me as I was starting a family.

I agree that teachers who whine so much are more than obnoxious, but I think that's more of a Facebook phenomenon than a real life tally. I have literally never heard a teacher in an actual, real-life conversation complain like the stereotypical epidemic portrayed in these quarterly threads. But I'm with most of you, they knew what they were getting into, so I don't want to hear it or read about it constantly on my news feed. That said, I will repeat that it is a much more difficult gig than most realize.

And I think teachers should get paid significantly more. Not to reward the current ones, but to attract the better ones. Ones that could be great at reaching kids, discovering their unique talents, developing them, and preparing them to be successful members of society. Standards to teach should be higher, they should be paid based on accomplishments rather than tenure.

For 5 days it would be a pain in the arse but over an entire school year starting from the beginning it would be the easiest job ever if you are competent at all. The salary would suck but for a woman who is doing it as extra income its the easiest job ever because even if you are only given a chalkboard to teach on and pencils and paper for your students if you are a competent person who commands respect then you will teach them all they need to know.

I'd pick 5 days out of the summer when most of them are off. I could easily do that job.
