I am always amazed at how they find people that start fires. Seems damn near impossible without a confession or witnesses.

For real.

Maybe a guilty conscience friend ratted them out.

I am sure there are some fire fighters here that can clarify, but I remember hearing a fireman speak at a career day type thing in middle school and he asserted that they will always figure out how it started and who frickin' did it too. No sense in trying to hide it.

Only if they squeal or caught on camera.

If I go to the middle of the woods and start a fire, how the hell are they going to trace it back to me?

Kinda jumping to conclusions, huh? Who knows how old they are and if it was even done out of malice.

Find the origination point of the fire. Find nearest camera with angle showing the road going in. Review footage during the window of the suspected arson. Locate and question each driver. Place you in federal pound me in the arse prison when they trip you up about your alibi.

Could have been kids who started what they thought was an innocent campfire. I know we did that in the woods behind my house all the time when I was a kid. It's a horrible thing, for sure. But it may be that there was no intent of "arson" at all.

I know a couple of fireman. A house can be burned completely to the ground and it's amazing how well they can determine the cause, how, and where to a f'ing tee. From that info and evidence, much like any crime, you can narrow a lot down. It truly is amazing.
