Yeah, had a similar experience with att a couple weeks ago. My contract was up and I wanted to get the M8. Was willing to pay $200 and just renew my current contract, but the rep told me they couldn't do it. I had to change to the new plan format and lease the phone. My bill would be roughly the same..
The rep told me I can go to radio shack or best buy or online if I wanted to own the phone and renew the contract, but att no longer did this in store.
Kinda pissed me off.

But the phones were not the newest upgrade with Iphone on the market.
The S4 Active had been out a whole 4.5 months when I bought it and the Moto X was only out about 3 months so you are way off actually. They were still some of the newest offerings on the market.

I am lost on this....
What are you lost on? By bought I mean they came with my contract and they will be mine to keep once I fulfill my contract. All at no extra cost above my regular rate plan as I stated earlier.
I am not contradicting myself and would hope you are smart enough to understand that there was no hidden meaning. How would you prefer I say it next time so as not to confuse you?

What kind of tablet, I will google the price of it for you. You do realize they will make $120/yr of of your tablet being added, right?
Glad you can do simple math. I would have never put together that $10 per month = $120 per year on my own.
That doesn't change the fact that last year the tablet was retailing for $299 - $399 depending. It can now be had for less on eBay but it won't be the 4G version. FWIW it was also only out for about 6 months when I bought it so again it was still a newer offering too.
As a matter of fact, all of the stuff I got is still pretty pricey out of contract.

I looked into this briefly the other day. Don't you have to trade the phone in for a new one when it comes time for a new one? I just remember glancing over something that might have said that.
ETA nevermind, I just read it again. You trade it in only if you upgrade at 12 or 18 months. Still, you basically pay for almost the whole phone and you don't keep it if you choose to upgrade early?

You can do it on their website too I am fairly certain.

As of 2012, ATT gave huge discounts on hardware by signing 2 yr contract. As far as I know, ATT no longer offers discounts for hardware (at least on top tier phones). What they do instead, is allow you to finance phones @ 0% for a term length of your choosing. They call this the ATT Next Installment Program. Buying a phone and plan is now more complicated and sheisty than buying a used car.

I believe ATT has the same thing. I looked into upgrading 2 lines not under contract and the phone rep said that I was receiving a discount for those lines not under contract.
$25 per line/month is significant.

Do as I did with AT&T. I bought a pre-paid "Go Phone" (Nokia 520) for $48 at Wal Mart and took it in and had it activated under my Mobile Share plan. It may not be as fancy as the iphone, but for the difference in money and monthly charges, it gets the job done. No contract commitment.

Furthermore, if you lose the phone or it breaks out of warranty, you still pay for it over a period of time. I don't feel the insurance offered is very good for the price paid.

The only thing that doesn't make me want to get the new one is having to buy a new mophie case

I just looked at the options...
I currently pay: $73.89 + $5.83 taxes/fees
- 450 Minutes: $39.99
- Unlimited texts: $20.00
- Unlimited data: $30.00
- Work discount credit: -$16.10
Next: $79.97
- Phone for Next 18: $24.17
- 2GB Mobile Share(unlimited call/text): $65(If I exceed data, additional $15 for 1GB.)
- Work Discount credit: -$9.20
After two years, with my current setup, I'll end up paying $240 for a new phone up front + $1773.36 for the plan. $2013.36 total excluding taxes/fees
After two years, assuming I don't upgrade after 18 months, total cost would be $1919.28 with Next excluding taxes/fees. I'm limited to 2GB here, though.
Am I missing anything? At face value, I though it was a scam, but I'm starting to lean the other way.

Thats what I'm weary about.. What happens if/when I lose or break a leased phone? Do I have to just lease another but still have to pay monthly installments on the first?
Posted on 8/24/14 at 2:41 pm to lilsnappa
I think you pay out the rest of the installments...but aren't you in the same boat if you lose a phone you paid full price for or you paid the $200 subsidized price and are too early for an upgrade?
