I had the original Samsung Captivate (galaxy S1) and then the Galaxy S2 before making the switch to the iphone 4s, which is what I'm still currently using. With the Samsungs they both started out great but after about 9 mths to a year with each the batteries started to drain super fast to the point that I practically needed to keep them charging all the time. Then the charger cord port on the phone (mini usb) would get so worn out that the Galaxy phones wouldnt charge anymore.

When I first got this iphone 4s battery life was far and away better than the Samsungs were when I got them brand new. It has since deteriorated now and i'm looking to get a new phone. I havent decided to make the jump back to Android or to the 5s yet.

The GS4 has been out for a while now but I see people love it. How far from being considered the cutting edge for Android is it? If it's not, what Android phone is? (excluding the Note 3, I dont like the size)

eta: Im with At&t

Give it a few more months the phone will go to shite. I have had both phones and the Samsung always ends up getting really slow and almost unusable. Apple makes a much better product who offers better warranties.

I am anti-Apple, but my iPhone is one thing I won't budge on. After developing on Android with an NFC-based application, I genuinely just can't stand it. I find that Android's Linux beginnings are really evident. The out-of-the-box experience is just lacking. I don't want to get a new phone and have to research a decent way to text and send e-mails. Then again, I'm not very big on using my phone for things other than surfing the web rarely, calls, and texts, so screen size and customization is just not something I'm worried about. That said, NFC is awesome and working with it on Android was a lot of fun. I just deal with computers and whatnot all day so another computer that I can tinker with is the last thing I need. Great hardware, great software, but it just isn't my cup of tea.

Android hasn't been clunky or laggy since ice cream sandwich users updated to jelly bean, which was about a year ago.

Yes, I do, but I don't trust myself with electronic gadgets like an iphone enough to try to change it out myself. Im afraid something will screw up, or i'll lose all my stored photos etc..

Can any one tell me the safest way to root the S4 with Android 4.3 (AT&T)? There was a thread a while back about CyanogenMod, but they did not have S4 AT&T as a compatible device. I found this thread with instructions and a file, but I wasn't sure if it is safe or not.

I just switched to the S4 from jailbroken iphone, and I need to get my pandora skip hack and wifi tethering back haha

Also, what are the best sites for learning about rooting and creating back-ups, etc? I've been to a few sites but everything is either too basic or too advanced haha I want to make sure I have a way to unroot and backup/etc. Also, I am a little confused about "flashing" different ROMs.

I'm in the same boat except I switched right when the S4 came out. I agree with almost everything you said.

I personally think the S4's camera is better than the iphone though. I havent tried the new iphone's camera but the S4 takes great pictures and has a bunch of different camera modes to get the right picture.

Another con I would add in is the layout/format of the alarm and the different types of alarm noises. I like how the iphone is set up in chronological order. The S4 is set up in the order that you created them in. I also dont trust any of the S4's alarms to wake me up. I know the buzzer alarm noise on the iphone will. I still use my old iphone for my alarm.

The size worried me too but it really isn't that bad and it doesn't take long to get used to. Although I did have an otter box on my iphone which made it kinda bulky and I just have a regular case on my S4. So that may have been why. But I find the increase in screen size to be worth it. Plus it's harder to drop which is always nice.

I wanted so badly to like android. I really did. Downloaded swiftkey, switched over to google contacts, etc. There was so much great about it.

I really think my experience was soured by getting the HTC OneX over the GSIII. The battery life was shite, random discharges, ATT's complete lack of updates. HTC's software was not compatible with my brand new laptop, but was with my 10 year old desktop, so I couldn't synce my phone from my laptop. The form factor is not a huge deal for me; I actually like not having a brick in my pocket.

First, overall, I like the S4 MUCH better, so I will speak from that perspective.

Not surprising coming from a gump!
