There are a couple of very good surgical oncologists at Ochsner, but I would get 2 oppinions.
MD Anderson is a great place, but they have their share of complications and bad outcomes just like everybody else

The surgeon should be able to provide the number of cases they've done. Compare it to those at mda, but as others have said, a 2nd opinion never hurts

Pray that it's not cancer. 90% of all pancreatic cancer diagnosis's die within a year. We lost my mother-in-law to it and recently a high school friend. My wife spends a lot of time with a charity here in Bham supporting UAB and their gastro-intestinal cancer group.

Being a Prostate Cancer survivor, these are the facts:
M D Anderson has experienced over 3 times the cases that Ochsners may observe and the surgeons at MD Anderson have performed surgery multiple times than the local hospitals.
If you have the resources, do not hesitate to get a second opinion from M D Anderson. My hospital has always been Ochsners, but M D Anderson performed my surgery and they did great.

This isn't even debatable.

I read Dr. Mary's Monkey and it says Oschner is the reason cancer is so prevalent today, He collaborated with David Ferrie to make weaponized cancer for use against Castro. I also always eat at least a handful of stupid pills every day. That's why I posted this trivial irrelevant bullshite here today.
FIFY
OP: MDA as you would always wonder if you should have gone there if things locally do not go well.
Good luck.

But the other thing that's important is the location of tumor in pancreas is it in the head, body, or tail? Makes a difference in the surgical procedure needed. Having said that, I'm sure ochsner has someone who can do the surgery but I doubt they doubt they do 1/4 of the amount they do at mda.
Mass is in the head. Deemed stage T3, if cancerous.
Thanks for everyone's advice and prayers. I'll meet with my parents in the morning and discuss pursuing some advice by MDA. Maybe we will get biopsy results tomorrow also.
I guess I'll find out soon enough if their insurance will cover review/treatment from MDA also.

Go to Houston now, don't listen to any contrary opinions or think about it

Try to get an appointment with Bolton/Conway at Ochsner and whomever their equivalents at MDA are, if that is feasible. Review the scans and treatment options with both groups and then go with the doctor you are most comfortable with.
Ochsner gets referrals from the entire gulf coast for pancreatic cancer and I believe they had a higher pancreatic surgical numbers compared to their colleagues at MdA this past year.
Treatment is standardized and as long as you go to a high volume center your dad will be in good hands.

MD Anderson is no different than any other cancer hospital out there. Their research is unbelievable, but their docs are just as good and sound as Oschner.

Get the surgery done wherever you feel comfortable and the surgeons have a high volume of pancreatic surgeries.
For treatment get that in BR. Your dad will have access to the same treatments and will be able to be at home. That is a huge deal.
Mary Bird Perkins-OLOL fies great work and the quality of care is as good as anywhere. MDA refers most "routine" patients from the area there for treatment. Many of the docs trained at MDA and are still "in the loop" if consultation is needed- usually only needed if there is a specific clinical trial that might potentially be applicable.

Prayers sent to you and your family, man.
My only advice is to load them up ASAP and get to MDA before it is too late. They can work miracles when there is no hope. My best friend of many years went to MDA when it was too late and hopeless. They sent him home the same day they saw him. Hindsight being 20/20, I wonder daily if things were different had he gone there 8 months prior.

There should not even be a discussion. MD Anderson is the way to go. My closest friend was diagnosed with Stage 3 pancreatic cancer. The local surgeon was scheduled for surgery to remove the tumor, but we got into MD Anderson the day before actual surgery. Doctors at MD Anderson told us she would have died on the table.
MD Anderson is a cancer treatment hospital. They are fantastic with helping with the emotional trauma of a cancer diagnosis. My friend lived 17 months when she was only expected to live 3-6. I credit MD Anderson for her extra time.

My uncle practically lived at MDA for much of the past few years fighting a very aggressive blood cancer and while it wasn't enough to save him, it did extend his life to a couple more years and a half and that was enough to see his daughter graduate from high school. Those extra years were pretty comfortable for him until the last couple months until he died just this past december.
If it were any other hospital, my uncle would've died a few years ago. I credit MDA for enabling my cousin to have the memory of her father at her graduation and my aunt being able to experience her 30th wedding anniversary with her husband.

Prayers sent. I lost my grandfather to pancreatic cancer, it's no joke. I wish your father a speedy recovery wherever you choose to do the procedure.

Hold-off until you meet with the surgeon. It'll be either Dr Bolton or Conway, both are top-notch.
I've had two family members see Bolton for pancreatic cancer. One had the whipple and his back to near 100%. Unfortunately, the other wasn't curable but he and his nurse continued to check on her.
If you dig into their quality numbers, specifically for the whipple procedure, it's right there with MDA.

Get a second opinion.
Also I personally would just let Oschner do it if I trusted their ability. We can all split hairs but you need to factor in the availability, travel, and the stress all that can bring.
Naaa frick it, fly him up to Sloan in NYC
Great vibes are being sent your way. I hope the very best for your family going through this.

Ochsner is one of the finest medical facilities you will find. I highly recommend them.

I think when it comes down to the top echelon hospitals, which Ochsner is one, You need to start thinking about convenience, drive time, comfortability and things like that.
