A new report shows fewer Americans own a car with manual transmission let alone know how to operate one. And there appear to be a number of reasons for it.

The report from U.S. News and World Report show only 18 percent of U.S. drivers know how to operate a stick shift. It says that because of advancements in automatic transmissions and fuel economy, only about 5 percent of vehicles sold in the U.S. today come with a stick shift. That’s down from 25 percent of cars in 1987.

The third pedal is also bad for re-sale value, on average selling for $2,000 less than cars with automatic transmissions.

If you've got a penis and you can't drive a standard then your father failed you.

That's because the purchase price is also less... you aren't paying for an automatic transmission.

And the part about fuel economy is also false. Manual>Auto

Yep. I was forced to learn to drive using a standard, so was my wife. My son can enough to get by.

I suspect that correlates with the percentage of a certain age group in the population.

In 20 yrs no one will know how to drive

Stick shifts make it hard to drink your beer and drive.

Wife & I can drive manual but we never had one around to teach the kids. Oh well. They'll be fine.

Stick shifts also SUCK in Baton Rouge traffic.

I don't understand the machismo behind manual transmissions. The best cars in the world don't use old-school manual transmissions anymore. I admit there is a fun factor with manual transmissions when you can heel-toe the pedals in to a corner and throw the stick in to the lower gear before roaring back out of the turn and going back up through the gears, but let's not pretend it's a necessity in the modern world. If I'm going for speed, then I'm going with something I don't have to take my hands off the wheel or use a clutch.

Isn't the MSRP almost 2k less as well for a manual?

I'd never own an automatic if I had it my way.

I've put 90k miles on my car and still love driving it, even in heavy traffic. Everyone who said I'd regret it in a month was wrong.
