Here's the catch, a few people where I am now went out of their way to make sure I got this current promotion. They even defended my choice when I ignored what others wanted and chose to move up more than I should have. I feel as though I owe them for the favor.

Talk with your supervisor to try and renegotiate. However, corporate loyalty is becoming a thing of the past. Do what is best for you and your family.

Only you can really make the decision, but neither is wrong.

A position has opened at another place which would allow me to jump a considerable amount. This position would not be an option if I were not just promoted.

You better make sure as hell that the new gig is in the bag.

You are in a bad spot but if its that much of an upgrade then put your big boy pants on and tell them.

And they would likely choose whatever is best for them, were they given the same opportunity.

That's because there is no incentive for the employee to stay at a place for 20, 30, 40 years anymore. You can bring your 401k along to every job, pensions are disappearing, raises are tougher and tougher to find, and employees are rarely treated as anything other than an insignificant cog in the machine.

Why stay at your current job getting 3-5% raises every year when you can jump for a 15-25% raise now and start adding those 3-5% on top for a few years and then jump again 4-5 years later?

Are you serious? Are you not gonna apply and accept a better position than your current one just because someone stuck their neck out for you to get a rinky dink promotion?

This, and you could always get them to match the offer, or work 10-15 years to get where you want to be.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

I'd give my current employer a little mote weight in the decision. This sounds like one of those learning experiences. No getting around those sometimes.

Make your best informed decision and never regret your choice.
