quote:

Last night, during an event at the Sydney Opera House (where Hawking appeared as a hologram) an interviewer asked Hawking, "What do you think is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction and consequently breaking the hearts of millions of teenage girls across the world?"

Hawking's response was optimistic, largely because it drew from the multiverse theory, or the idea that parallel universes can exist simultaneously.

"My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay close attention to the study of theoretical physics. Because one day there may well be proof of multiple universes," he said. "It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another different universe—and in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction."

Serious question that confuses me about the whole multiverse thing:

If things slightly vary in each universe then over time the differences would be so vast that the only similarities would be the continents and similar technological advancements of the civilizations. Unless there is one main universe that the other variations keep updating from, or the amount of universes keep growing exponentially.

If someone knows more please explain

For instance. If 10 universes appeared today just like ours and say they would slowly take different paths. If your son met and married a different girl bc one thing changed then things across the board would change. After multiple generations all off the offspring in one universe would be different individuals than all the ones in another. So at that point there is no band that has the same guy as the one in other universe. It's just a bunch of different physical earths with completely different populations.

There just can't be all these changes yet every generation has the exact replicas of individuals in the other. You can't be a lawyer in NY in one and a real estate agent in LA in another and still create the same offspring who would also create the same offspring as the other universe

Maybe there are enough universes to make that possible.....

So even if you lived in LA instead of NY in one universe the woman you would have children with would have to be in LA also not NY also. On top of that all the mates your kids were to be with would have to end up in the same place as well. Also all 5 billion current humans on earth finding the same mates in whatever areas these different paths take them. Even natural disasters would have to cause the deaths of the same exact people that are in different areas now so they can't reproduce and create different individuals. This would have had to happened since cave men.

Like I said I don't know the physics behind a possible multiverse. I just don't see how it's is possible for there to be a place where there is an exact copy of every person on earth living slightly different lives. I could see there being another, or many, universes where there are replicas of earth with civilizations developing in different ways but with completely different individuals

"Zayne" of one direction cannot exist unless all of these things went exactly the same for earths entire existence. And now he is not going to break up the band in one universe like he did in the other. That is where that universe decides it will differ lol

When you consider time as a distinguishing factor there is literally infinite copies of our own universe including earth of course. Time is the 5th dimension.

SH is a very smart man.... but his "multiverse" theory is totally farfetched.

lets find life forms outside out planet before we start theorizing that not only does intelligent life exist beyond earth but it is essentially a mirror image of our "world".

Think about it like this: if you were to freeze the entire knowable universe at one point in time, you could look at it as a giant puzzle (the universe) made up of a bunch of puzzle pieces (the atoms and space and everything that makes up the universe). So, at any given singular point in time, the universe is this giant puzzle that is infinite in every direction and you can mathematically estimate how far you'd have to travel to arrive at a place that has the same exact combination of puzzle pieces fitting together as the universe that we're in. So, because the universe is infinite and because there could, likewise, be an infinite number of permutations of those pieces, there are an infinite number of places that exactly resemble where we are and an infinite number of places that are both similar to and slightly and extremely different from where we are, as well.

There's this thing called M Theory that posits that whatever caused our universe to exist could be repeating that process infinitely, so you could think of our universe as a bubble amongst an infinite number of bubbles (the M in M Theory stands for "membrane," which is what I'm calling a "bubble," here).

I'm not a physicist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. I'm sure someone can come along and correct or add to my explanation, but I'd recommend the book "The Universe Next Door" to you. It describes really complex theoretical physics in lay terms that I could understand. It's a neat book, even if not exactly scientifically rigorous.
