At this point it's like the boy who cried wolf with these St. George people. First it was always "we've almost got the signatures!" Then they say that they have enough signatures, but it comes out that thousands were fraudulently obtained. Either shite or get off the pot.

I know several people who are for the vote who haven't signed yet.
Love this gem.
They are for a new city, but not enough to sign a petition.
How are you going to get them to go vote?

I don't know how "many," but I do personally know some who are for the city but afraid to sign due to fear of harassment / retaliation. Unfounded or not, a few state workers and one acquaintance who works for DPW have said they do not want their name on the petition because they are afraid they may lose their job. I think the state workers may be a stretch, but I don't blame the DPW guy for thinking that way.
As far as harassment, well, better together has already proven that with their mailer. While all of that is public record, I can only imagine how unsettling it must be to get a form like that with all of your personal information already filled out. All it takes is one crazy to get his hands on that list.
Not to mention the unwanted door to door solicitations, from both sides. While the St. George people were reluctant to take no for an answer almost to the point of becoming a nuisance, the better together individuals were downright hostile and hateful when I refused to sign their "anti-petition."
So yeah, I can understand the hesitation to make your signature public record. On the other hand, to my knowledge at least, the way you choose to vote in an election is not public record, so there's that.

Absolutely false.

none of the articles say what they are getting signatures for. What is their goal?

Downtown Baton Rouge is improved and the area between LSU and Downtown will be developed within 10 years, making it a much better area.
Wouldn't this St. George thing completely frick those plans up?

Wealthy people all left Jackson, MS and now its a piece of shite. It would just pain me to see that happen to Baton Rouge. I think Baton Rouge can turn a corner and already has, outside of the crime issue. Maybe I am just a hopeless optimist though.

Because re-gentrification with other people's money is the right thing to do. Nevermind that it more often than not pushes out the people who have lived there for decades.

Yes it could. But those idiots in "St. George" think they can isolate themselves from the evil City of Baton Rouge.
Fact this they can't. And anything they do to damage EBR damages them in the process.

It isn't at all about isolating from Baton Rouge. It's about having representative democracy where our tax dollars are not misused for pet projects that do not benefit us in any way while our schools and roads are severely under-served.

To me it's the total opposite. It keeps people from fleeing to surrounding communities with the great schools that we COULD have.
As of now, I know way too many folks that are packing up and going to Zachary, ascension, etc. just so they get respectable public schools. If St. George happens, I'd be perfectly happy to stick around here, build a house and keep eating at all the BR restaurants I always have. That has to be better for BR.

"Those people" have nothing to do with my position. That statement was only in response to the grandiose claim that the area was going to be great in 10 years.

packing up and going to Zachary
Zachary schools are progressively declining as more and more people are getting upset with the "education" they are providing and pulling their kids out and sending them to private schools or moving to BR for the magnet program.

All of this could of been avoided if that new school system woulda been allowed.
I say go for it St George.....even tho I live 1/2 mile from the proposed city line

The guy who 'better together' sent to our door turned into a total a-hole when I told him my wife and I had both signed the petition and didn't feel like changing our minds.
After trying to politely end the conversation 2 or 3 times I had to shut the door in his face to get rid of him.

Exaggerate much?
What I said:

And I don't care if gentrification pushes people out. They aren't forced to sell their homes. They get paid substantial sums of money by people for those homes. I hear this shite all the time in Nashville. People paid 90k for their house in 1985 and are offered 300k for the land now and accept it. How is that unfair to anyone?
Now if people want rules about maintaining architecture standards and not demolishing historic homes, I am all for that.
