Fwiw, I'm pretty sure they are still going to be selling stuff, just they won't have any physical stores. I saw they were trying to be bought.

Academy is bigger in TX and the Deep South.

According to Wikipedia, Dicks has over 600 locations and Academy has 200.

I've always thought of Academy as a Southern sporting goods store. The only ones I had ever been to were in Little Rock and Baton Rouge until they hit our marketing in the last 18 months. I always thought Dick's was the premier sporting goods store, but that's the difference between one being out of PA and the other being out of Katy, TX.

Guess the company turned out to be not the authority on sports after all.

The Sports Authority near me always looked empty any time I went there. They always had a ton of online sales. Many times you could find stuff on sale online there cheaper than Amazon.

At least it's not Academy. They have better prices on ammo. FYI- I hate Dicks.

I prefer Academy, which has better selection and prices, although the quality at Dick's is bit higher. It's like comparing Wal-Mart and Target.

Surprised they didn't go out of business 5-6 years ago.

Ahh, now I see why it was so downright depressing in there today. I walked in to look for an Adidas section... One pants rack and one shirt rack. "Wasted my gas coming here". Turned 180.

The Sports Authority near me in CO always has better merchandise. Of course they were catering to different sports and Academy has no presence.

The two near me that I know of have been having going out of business sales for a while now. I think the Texas stores were some of the first to close in an attempt to save the business. Was 30-50% off, now it's deeper than that. Stopped in a while back to see what they had and it was a war zone. Place had been seriously picked through. They were never that great, but that was probably because I'm in Houston and Academy has a store up on every block.

We had a Sports Authority here until Academy moved into town in a location directly across the street with easier access.

SA didn't last another year before they closed that store. Their selection was average at best and the store was smallish with a tight feel. Don't miss them.

They do send out good coupons like 25% off an item almost weekly.

I prefer Academy too. And there is a lot of overlap in products too. Nike is Nike, UnderArmour is UnderArmour, Reebok is Reebok...whether you buy it at Academy or Dick's.

I still have a gift card from there. Can I use it?

You would have to ask the store. If not, you may have a claim in bankruptcy court which means you will get next to nothing.
