Spinoff thread: why do LSU fans try to discredit USC’s 2003 AP national championship?

They rightfully won the AP title that year. The AP was not bound to follow the BCS results like the Coaches poll was.

Also, USC was probably better than LSU that year anyway if we’re being honest. All 4 of their D-lineman started in the NFL and Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, LenDale White, Mike Williams, Keary Colbert, etc. were very lethal on offense.

There should be an LSU sports board or something.

The media bias towards USC was maddening. The narrative was that LSU didn't deserve a shot and that USC was the "real" champion.

LSU fans were rightfully tired of the disrespect.

What is that supposed to mean? AP title ceased to matter once we started settling it on the field

The AP #1 gets a trophy at the end of the year and is technically still national champion so that was the basis

No one was beating that LSU team in the Superdome with the way they were playing at the end of the season.

Yes...by being voted #1. They didn't beat the #2 (or even #3) team in a bowl game to win it.

The BCS formula was screwed up to keep Oklahoma in the Top 2 after losing the Big 12 Championship Game (in embarrassing fashion, at that), but that was the format that the conferences had agreed to to determine a National Champion.

The AP did not.

You should probably play in and win the national championship game to say you’re a national champion.

Did they have to surrender their journalist trophy because of the Reggie issue?

No. That was 2004.

If you’re seriously asking, it’s because every college agreed to the BCS championship and a college that didn’t even play in the championship game claimed to be the champions.

USC won a popularity contest, not a NC.
