Spinoff of Spinoff: Are you bullish on New Orleans (city limits)?

I see New Orleans at a major crossroads. Development is exploding like crazy as young people flock to the city from all over. However, a terrible police force, racial politics, deplorable road and drainage infrastructure, oil crunch, noise ordinances, corruption, and pushback against charter schools threaten to undo much of that.

It seems like New Orleans could bust through to be great or completely collapse and revert back to what it was prior to Katrina.

What say you?

What commerce does New Orleans have that it can grow? What can the city hang it's hat on to develop and build around? I'm not counting on tourism.

Serious question.

Right now it is the port and tourism for the most part. Getting the police departments numbers up should be priority number one right now.

Numbers are important and will not get better nor will the performance of the force occur as long as the consent decrees are in effect.

Wow, who is winning the Super Bowl this season and by what score? I want to place a bet.

Id say they have a shot at tech industry because it's a hipster haven, but the tech ship may have sailed. When will the boom end?

Probably a few more years to go, but it has to happen. Housing is insane right now and I don't know how it can go any higher.

Yes I do and should have mentioned it but the port is something New Orleans has always had and not something that will go away. But even it has it's limits with access, ships getting larger, competition from Mobile, Houston etc...

I meant in terms of manufacturing, hi tech, industry etc...

Cotton and oil for the most part are gone. Finance is gone. Can any of that come back?

What will create jobs beyond the service industry? Serious discussion. Can it work with Baton Rouge to create a regional hub or destination for 21st century economic engines?

Do they both need each other?
