Exactly. Life is too short to think that anything else is the right answer. If your goal on a trip is to drive and experience the bullshite minutia of the country, then go for it. But if your goal is to go to single places, you're an idiot if you don't fly to them if they are a very long drive away.

You never got on a flight before you needed to go on a business trip? Maybe on your father's business trip that he's nice enough to carry you along, but surely everyone should be on a plane before then.

I grew up in a middle class family of 4 kids. Not a chance in hell my dad was forking over that much to fly 6 people.

I think I flew once as a toddler when I was an only kid and another time to meet up with my family on vacation when I had a golf tournament at like 15.

I just have a hard time believing someone from a middle class family could not have flown at least somewhere before getting into their twenties. I'd just think it's a parental duty to do this for your kids.

Even if you can't afford to send you, your wife, and 4 kids to someplace all together, I think you owe it to them to give each of your kids a one-on-one vacation that is far away from your home. For you and your son, take a vacation to Alaska and see the mountains and whales. If you have a daughter, let her and her mother go out to New York or San Francisco and have a nice few days together. Maybe my family just did things differently, but I do think that everyone that can even feasibly afford it owes it to their kids to at least take them somewhere far away that doesn't involve a 40 hour car ride.

I think you need a reality check on the expenses for a middle class family of 4 with kids in private school.

My mother is terrified of flying, and aside from a trip to Disney World, we never had a reason to go anywhere we couldn't reasonably drive.

If you plan this well in advance and promise your child a single trip right when they graduate high school like my parents did, then I don't think it's that much of a burden for parents to put aside 60 bucks a month for 5 years to pay for it. My parents gave both me and my sister that option, and it is still among the best experiences of my life, and I fully plan on doing the same with my theoretical child one day.

This may be the most pretentious thing I've ever read on here

Putting aside 60 bucks a month is pretentious? I didn't think there were that many poors on this site.

Now multiply that by 2...

I'm sure my parents could have spent an extra $3500 on each of us if they needed to...but they put all of us through private school and college without requiring any of us to take out loans. I've since been to about 40 states and a good bit of North America because I wasn't saddled with student loan debt.

And if I was one of 2, I'd most certainly have been on more lavish vacations with my family.
