Do you not understand that a varsity letter is an achievement? You can say it isnt all you want, but it doesnt make you right. The sky is blue, fact. A varsity letter is an achievement, fact

I have already acknowledged in this thread it is an achievement.

Getting out of bed is an achievement.

10 kill-streak in Call of Duty is an achievement.

Walking a 5k is an achievement.

Some achievements matter, some don't.

I'll let you figure out what category "earning a varsity letter" falls into.

lol at people in here acting like "the letter must be earned". It's a fricking HS varsity letter, not some prestigious rhodes-scholarship type honor.

My HS gave them out for academics too...

At the awards ceremony each year, they'd hand out 300-400 letters for a school of 1100 kids.

Back in my coaching days we had almost the exact situation. Had a special needs kid that wore "0". After his jr. year we gave him a letter jacket. Had a kid on the team in his grade that didn't letter, his momma pitched a damn fit. We had to take his jacket from him. So, our rule was a kid had to enter 5 varsity qtrs to letter, 1st two football games I put his arse at Super Safety! Lined him up about 40 yards behind everybody got flagged all 5 times for having 12. Didn't care, got him his jacket the second ballgame. He wore it in the 100 degree heat. Needless the say that momma was not real happy with me!

You're one of the good ones.

We had a special needs kid when I was in school that was our manager. He was pretty damn annoying sometimes, but he just wanted to be a part of it all. He got a letter jacket as well. Who the hell cares.

But considering JROTC and Band both had letter jackets (looked different than the athletic jackets) then pretty much everyone at our school had one.

Is a varsity letter an achievement?
Is a varsity letter a participation award?

One is debatable, one is not.

Here's the bottom line to this whole issue. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you have the opportunity to make a kid with downs syndrome feel happy or generally better about themselves, unless it's something that's illegal, dangerous, or would harm them or anyone else, you do it. Period. Even if doing it means you make some special concessions to the "normal" SOP to do it.

Shhh.

There are alot of people in here who seem very fond of that varsity letter they earned. They are devastated to find out that it's such a meaningless accomplishment, a special needs student should be able to wear one to feel good about himself, even without "earning" it.

It's tough to find out that your biggest achievement is something of that magnitude, and we need to be respectful of their feelings.

Absolutely mind-blowing to me that anyone here thinks a high school letter is some kind of huge exclusive achievement to the extent that you can't give one to a retarded kid. Pathetic.

My high school band and academic letter looked terribly different from the athletic letters.

I can see it being special to someone into adulthood. Like they really worked their asses off for it and really learned about achievement that they still carry with them

but let the retarded kid have one you want to talk to him about fairness?

I admit the school didnt handle this very well either. What they should have done when they saw him at school with the letter is called him and the mom into a meeting and said something like this, "Now Johnny, Im going to hold onto this jacket for a bit. But you are going to be able to earn it back. What we need from you is to be the loudest and most vocal guy on the team for the next 3 games, and the first one to practice for the next two weeks. Then, we will have a letterman presentation for you the next week at assembly"

If that happened, that kid would have been so fricking pumped to do actually get that jacket in front of his peers, especially being told he had to "earn" it. Yall would be shocked at how much downs kids respond to having goals and jobs that make them feel like they are being treated equal and depended on. That is how they grow and become able to semi live on their own

Allow the young man to earn his letter by being a co-manager for the team. I don't care if he sweeps the floor or counts the number of basketballs for practice.

I'm sure 99 % of high school letter winners have outgrown their jackets by the time they are 25 years old anyway.

This kid has more problems than most will ever know. Let him have school spirit.
