I have to speak to our entire company (about 240 people) in a couple weeks. I'll be up for about 20 minutes. 10 to 15 slides in my deck. It's my material so I'm comfortable talking to it..

The problem: just the thought of speaking to large groups is one of my biggest anxieties. I'd rather swim with sharks than do this shite. I've never done it before, and I am already pissing my pantalones.

Those who've done this before: got any advice for a first-timer?

Practice, practice, practice. Watch your Uhhs.

Then get drunk right before and let it rip.

Get some confidence. You're covering your own material so you're the smartest person in the room.

Start off with some humor.

You'll be fine.

This is going to sound cliche, but be yourself. People run into problems because they try to sound or act like someone else they’ve seen who has done this well, but most of the time I see people who suck it’s because you can tell they are trying to be someone else.

Practice… alone, in front of family , friends or colleagues. Break it up into sections to speak to different groups in practice..

I find larger groups easier because while the total number of people is greater, it allows you to consistently change eye contact points..

If you know the material it shouldn’t be a problem. Don’t read from a script, don’t read the PP. have a couple of bullet points you want to hit on for each slide. Remember most of the people on the call aren’t listening or could care less what you are saying.

Just get through the first 5 minutes and your time will be up before you know it.

Also - Remember that 85% of the room doesn’t give a shite about what you’re saying and are just trying to make it to lunch.

Stick to your information.
Don’t try to be funny or slick.
Don’t drink or smoke before you go out there to take the edge off. Everyone will know even if you think they don’t.

All you have to do is get started. After that the adrenaline kicks in and it’ll be over before you know it. Especially if you’re only talking for 20 minutes and you know this stuff we’ll.

Question: For this event, will there be time, just prior where you could have to chance to walk around and casually talk to any of the audience.

For example, most of my presentations have a short break period before the session. I find it helps to calm things by walking around and talking to some of the audience. Usually they help break the ice by commenting about what you will be speaking about. Yes, most of it might be BS like, "Hey, I'm looking forward to what you have to say" kind of stuff but it doesn't matter.

If I could do this virtually to 20,000 people I'd kill it. But it's face to face in person, they'll all be seated while I'm on a stage. I just get the heebie jeebies thinking about having 240 sets of eyeballs staring at me. I realize it sounds ridiculous and I can't really explain why it makes me so nervous.

Some of the advice so far has been great, I appreciate it folks

Just relax. No one is expecting you to be Tony Robbins.
