FLANDREAU, S.D. (AP) — The Santee Sioux tribe has already proven its business acumen, running a successful casino, a 120-room hotel and a 240-head buffalo ranch on the plains of South Dakota.

But those enterprises have not been immune to competition and the lingering effects of the Great Recession, so the small tribe of 400 is undertaking a new venture — opening the nation's first marijuana resort on its reservation. The experiment could offer a new money-making model for tribes nationwide seeking economic opportunities beyond casinos.

Santee Sioux leaders plan to grow their own pot and sell it in a smoking lounge that includes a nightclub, arcade games, bar and food service, and eventually, slot machines and an outdoor music venue.

"We want it to be an adult playground," tribal President Anthony Reider said. "There's nowhere else in American that has something like this."

The project, according to the tribe, could generate up to $2 million a month in profit, and work is already underway on the growing facility. The first joints are expected to go on sale Dec. 31 at a New Year's Eve party.

We stole their land, but they're taking it back one blackjack hand and dime bag at a time.

Don't confuse those dirty North Dakota yankees with the fine people of South Dakota.

This is what I want Colorado to do, allow smoking in public clubs, which it sounds like they are planning on doing soon. There's talks/negotiations in Denver. It'll be done on a municipality basis.

I've been enjoying Colorado. I could get really good weed wherever I lived, but it's awesome to be able to buy concentrates. Using coupons to buy weed is also pretty cool. And I'm looking forward to growing some this spring. And since my roommates (Boulder rent is fricking ridiculous) don't smoke, I'll probably grow 20+ plants.

I'm miss Louisiana, but I don't miss the paranoia.

I'm in the middle of the construction industry and have always gotten drug tested, until my new company. Drug testing usually boils down to federally funded projects, and the drug free work place act. If you're on projects with any federal money, they are required to test. My new company only works privately funded projects. So I'm not worried about anything.

It'll startwith the feds giving protection to medical marijuana patients. They'll switch it from schedule 1 to 2, and eventuality to a 3 or 4. Within a decade, it will be legally for recreational use within the decade, minus a few southern holdouts.

Luckily, Colorado has a great system, and the dispensaries have done an great job of following the rules. They track your purchases, to try to stop smuggling into other states. People might bring a few grams home. But any weight from Colorado is from the black market. There's still a few holdouts, but not like it was a few years ago. I've met several people in Boulder that have finally had to get jobs, because they can't make a living selling weed anymore.

I'm glad the Natives saw the writing on the wall, because they are going to make bank. They'll probably sell it for a premium, without the competition. But I'm sure people will be glad to spend $120+ for a 1/4. Hell, many are doing that right now at home.

It'll be interesting to see if they sell any concentrates or edibles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the tribe share the profits equally? If so, then goddamn that is some nice money.
