COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina has collected about $1.8 billion in a bank account over the past decade and state and private accountants are still trying to figure out where the cash came from and where it was supposed to go.

“It's like going into your bank and the bank president tells you we have a lot of money in our vault but we just don't know who it belongs to,” said Republican Sen. Larry Grooms, who is leading a Senate panel investigating the problem.

It's the latest trouble with the state's books and the two agencies, typically led by elected officials, that are in charge of making sure government accounts stay balanced.

I knew something was wrong with my brokerage account balance...

Hey, South Carolina, kindly return the funds asap. Thanks

Oh well in that case, they can't keep it!

That just happens to be the exact amount I overpaid my state income tax last year. I've been waiting for the refund.

Somebody was trying to embezzle state funds but then abruptly died, yet their scheme continued funding.

That's salami fraud, which every big 4 employee gets taught about in year one.

Not shocked with SC though.

How about they pause the birthday tax? Oh no, can't tax people less.

See, if they were more like Louisiana and would have more of these panels to investigate shite ahead of time, they wouldn't have these problems of unknown money.

What, no comment about Democrats ruining things? Oh wait, I forgot, South Carolina is a red state so there are no comments like that to blame the elected officials in a red state. It can only be used when there is a problem in a blue state or blue city.
