Sometimes they're even out of jurisdiction. And sometimes they will even tear up your ticket and take a $100 cash for "driving school" when you go to court. And sometimes you will get credit for driving school even though the guy teaching what was supposed to be a four hour class canceled it after five minutes because he had a little league game to coach.

I would do everything I could to pressure that cruise line into reimbursement.
My advice to him was to meet with cruise line and explain what happened and to tell them how he already cancelled every excursion they had purchased since he basically emptied his bank account. He didn't confirm, but didn't call me to loan him the $800 so I assume he was successful.

Corrupt cops. Do a background check on the gf. She might be in it too. She was the one that surprised him with the cruise.

He should have had her smuggle some bud in her prison purse.
Maybe some cookies in her nookie

Not too different from when i got pulled over for "speeding" in St.Landry parish. Call the DA office and the charges get dropped to a seatbelt ticket but the fine remains for $150.

Been to the Bahamas multiple times. Learned quick not to buy shite from anyone. I walked away from my resort once and never again. Was hassled immediately.
Tell him just to buy weed from the people working at the resort early in the morning before they open.

Write a scathing review about how they don't look out for the safety of their guests and drop them off in hostile areas. Copy your review and paste that shite in every post on their FB page, review sites, etc.
That’ll teach em Karen. You go girl
A woman nosedived of the top deck in handcuffs, you think anyone gives a flying frick about a review on a cruise?

Ah yeah, the old scam where you buy 2 cruise tickets for yourself and someone else, then scam them out of a mere $1000 that you split with 4 other guys. A true moneymaker

Brittney wishes she could have just paid a $1000 fine.

Sounds like the story an engineer might tell.

They then told him he would have to pay a hefty fine to avoid jail. Surprised by everything going on and having his girlfriend with him to worry about, he was pressured into paying a fine. He didn't have any cash, so they took him to an ATM and made him withdraw $1000, threatening that he would miss his ship if he didn't pay the fine promptly. His girlfriend called the ship to request assistance and though they came, they were told they would be charged a fee since they didn't buy the travel insurance offered. On top of being conned out of $1000, the cruise line told him it was an $800 charge for sending someone there.
Sounds like the cruise line was in on it.

Stuff like this happens everywhere on earth. Now, your son is wiser and will be able to recognize this stuff for the rest of his life. Welcome to adulthood.

Sadly, some of us get to learn from others’ naïveté

Your son's story sounds fishy. The Bahamian police don't really operate that way, especially with cruise ship guests on the tourist strip. I'm sure they did shake him down for a payout, though, but it was after he tried to buy weed. They did him a favor.
No, but whatever, I'm not going to get my feelings hurt with you thinking he was lying. I'm not sure why he would call me to tell me the story and lie. Why call me at all? I didn't give him any money and he only asked me to potentially loan him money if he got in a bind, since he emptied his bank account. Incidentally, he never called back later asking for money. Again, my point in sharing is so people on this board can learn from someone else's bad experiences and plan ahead when traveling and expect the worst in people.
