Pokemon is still a thing?

Put a basketball or football in your kids hands, cut out the Pokemon crap, and tell him he can thank you when he's 18.

They are pocket monsters. They can be captured by a pokeball. No one knows what happens when they are in the pokeball. They evolve up in power.

They send subliminal messages to kids to overthrow the empirical powers of the United States government from within.

Don't justify yourself to the other dude. Sports are great, but the realistic chances of anyone even going to a division one school is small as hell, especially if they don't grow into a body for that sport.

Pokemon is actually short for "digital monsters". The main character's name is Yugi and he's a member of a race called the Saiyans. Basically he just lives in a sewer, eats pizza, and beats up bad guys

Magikarp is absolute crap but if you keep him at the head of your party and swap him out before every battle he'll level up into Gyrados, who is pretty awesome.

Whoa whoa. I never said anything about playing D1 sports. I just don't remember in my day the high school girls clambering over each other for the Pokemasters.
