I would forward #1's email to the GM and tell the GM you asked for a different color/option and the guy "tried his best" but fell short in your choices, but gave a good price. Tell him dealer #2 found exactly what you wanted using the same methods as #1.
Tell him you bought from #2 because they actually fricking listened and found what you wanted, which most people will pay extra for instead of trying to talk you into something that really wasn't you choice in the first place.
Customer is KING and the punk at #1 failed to realize that.
Enjoy your vehicle from #2, no reason to give #1 another shot....unless you are being a dick and just trying to get them lower at #1.

You would not want to 'lock down' or initiate a trade with another dealer unless you have:
1 a solid commitment from the customer or
2 in rare circumstances, the unit they are procuring for you is one they'd like to have in their inventory even if your transaction falls through.
All of this is true. The common practice is getting you to buy or leave.

Happened to me at Hixson Ford in Alexandria. I was in the market for a new truck and told them I was looking for a new truck. He told me to test drive the F150 to see how it feels. I did and while I was out I found the perfect truck at the Toyota place.
I took the truck back to Ford and was like I will consider it but they started to try to strong arm that they had the papers ready to sign for the truck. I was like no I don't want that truck and give me my keys back. They started acting like I was a bad guy for leading them on. I told them give my keys or I'm calling the cops. Got keys and left.
Funny thing guy called me a few days later asking if I had reconsidered.

Dont worry about dealer 1. He was doing what he gets paid for and was trying to make you feel guilty. Apparently it worked. Car salesmen are snakes.

I am guessing dealer #2 is far away, if not I have no idea why he would have mentioned it.

The sales person didn't go with you on the test drive? There is no better feeling as a sales person is taking a car, that is on a test drive, back to it's dealer because you sold the customer something from your place.

Honestly, the salesperson is probably working a mini deal at this point and is tired of spending so much time with you. He may be more willing to do something if he needs a sale to hit a bonus, but at this point he is either going to win or lose your business right now. Many seasoned sales people will do this. They know they can go catch another, but they aren't going to bend over backwards for a mini deal. There is nothing wrong with what you did. Just go get the truck from the other dealer.
This. If Dealer 2 has the vehicle you want, with options and color, I don't see Dealer 1 getting your business anyway. He doesn't have what you want.

Exactly, he tried to flip him and it didn't work. Sales person has to try, that's his job. Nobody is at fault here. It's just the nature of the business.

Started talking to them on/off July 31 via text message, August 6th they sent me a offer for one that I decided I wanted to purchase, went in on the 11th to sign paperwork and was informed that the one they sent me was a "demo" and had other options added to it, and that they weren't going to pursue it. Sat around the dealership for a little while , while they found other perspective vehicles. Agreed upon vehicle #2 which is the vehicle they "locked down" for me. To me very little work time has been spent trying to make a sale. Most of the discussion has been via text message over the course of the day so they would have plenty of other time to deal with other business.

Dealer 1 found a truck with spec's close but not exactly to what I was looking for including not being the ideal color.
Quit worrying about Dealer 1. You went to Dealer 2, who fixed you up. Go get it and forget about D1. Resist the temptation to go thumb your nose at him/them. You will need them for service.

The problem is NO ONE around here has the truck I want in the specs i want. Regardless of where I went to they would have had to do a dealer trade

Exactly, because they don't care. It shows.

The salesperson is probably tired of getting customers doing this back and forth game. I get that customers are trying to get the best deal they can, but from the salespersons perspective, it gets old.

Dealers have the state gov in their pocket. This is what Telsa Motors has been fighting; the right to sell their product. And OP, stop being a bitch. You have the money an power in this deal. Use it.

And from a customers perspective , the games salespeople play, they get old

The salesperson screwed this up early. Should have never negotiated a price without a commitment.
This is the correct answer. Yes, he's probably mighty pissed but the reality is that until you sign on the dotted line he does not have a deal. You have to play nice when you expect to have to deal with the other person regularly, sure, but that isn't the case here.
I would respond to him by saying something along the lines of "Business is business, we aren't best buddies, and until you and I sign a contract we don't have a deal. Are you going to match or not?"
