Common in menopause, which is anywhere from late 40's to mid 50's. Could be thyroid.

Dude I'm a therapist with 14 years in nursing homes. My advice, get her to her MD to rule out a urinary tract infection (UTI) also have her carotid checked for blockage (early TIA could be a sign a big one is on the way ) I've seen both reek havoc with STM.

Seems a very early onset for Alz. / dementia, but Aricept is more effective when prescribed ASAP when symptoms first noticed. Do her and you a big favor and act now. Don't put it off.

Been down that road. Recommend obtaining long term care insurance ASAP , or having your dad do so. The policy I forced my dad to get saved him hundreds of thousands.

Any issues with the way she walks? Changes in behavior prior to the memory issue?

I may bump this thread again at a later time to ask you some questions. Just yesterday some stuff came up with my mom. She's 67 and currently in an assisted living facility in the memory care unit. They've basically told us they don't think they can care for her anymore. She seems to be somewhere between Stage 5+6 from what we know, but she's doing fine physically (no hygiene issues or problems eating) and her overall health is good. But she wanders a ton and she's becoming more and more aggressive.

We're sort of scrambling now because it looks like we may have to move her somewhere else or into a nursing home.

As a person who is going thorough dealing with a loved one with dementia, let me says this. IF it's that, you need to know that it's harder on the person's loved ones than the person themselves. My mom is out of it. She's taken care of and goes about her daily business not knowing what and who she doesn't remember. She isn't in pain, but she just isn't herself. It sucks for me and my family, but for her it's nothing. She isn't aware she's sick and for the most part, she's happy.

Hang in there. I'm sure your mother is fine. Keep us updated, if you like.

My mom has the same thing going on, but unlike your mom, mine refuses to go see a doc. Best wishes to your family brother

It's possible that it's depression. I recommend a solid neuropsych assessment.

Hate to ask this, but does she have a history of alcohol use/abuse or does that run in your family? Had one of my parents have early onset dementia because of booze.

LBD is not a rare disease. It affects an estimated 1.3 million individuals and their families in the United States. Because LBD symptoms can closely resemble other more commonly known diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, it is currently widely underdiagnosed. Many doctors or other medical professionals still are not familiar with LBD.

LBD is an umbrella term for two related diagnoses. LBD refers to both Parkinson’s disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. The earliest symptoms of these two diseases differ, but reflect the same underlying biological changes in the brain. Over time, people with both diagnoses will develop very similar cognitive, physical, sleep, and behavioral symptoms.

My grandma was diagnosed with this, late in life in her 80s though. But it's another one to have in the differential. Good luck CE.

Did this happen before, during, or after the lexapro?

Make sure to start taking pictures and videos now that she can still remember things.

Don't wait until it's too late.

Sign her up for one of those online brain building websites if you think she doesn't get enough mental activity that will really help slow down the progression. My mom has memory problems but tries to learn a new song on the piano every week and does a few of those online brain quizs and she claims that helps.
