Background: There's a guy who's borderline suicidal.

He was 26 years old. Had a solid job. Was applying to professional school. Clean cut. Athletic. Had a decent amount of money banked. Starting getting delusional and paranoid. No drugs. No alcohol. Lost all of his money. Skipped the interview for professional school because of the delusions. Lost a relationship. Got on the verge of legal trouble. Not even remotely in any trouble previously. Lost cars.

Now, he's broke. Living at home with his parents. Four years later. Almost no friends.

He's reapplying to professional school, but he seemingly doesn't care. His delusions and paranoia are gone. He's nominally religious. Claims to have a close relationship with CHRIST before all of this happened.

He's miserable in life. He's very open about it. Doesn't mind sharing his story.

What's the OT's opinion on mental illness? People tell him that it will get better, but I'm sitting there thinking I'd be borderline suicidal as well.

Started living out his delusions. Nothing serious. Didn't actually commit a crime. He was on the police radar allegedly. Totally out of his character.

He is. They started taking him off the meds because he snapped out of the delusions. The meds caused side effects. They monitor him in actuality but he's back to his condition pre psychosis except he's very depressed because abiut everything that happened.

The unfortunate thing about this is that yes, the meds do create side effects. It is like you are plugging one leak, then another one springs up and you feel like you don't have enough fingers to fill in all the holes where there are leaks.

I have seen it with teens who have ADD. The medicine works and makes them "not" ADD, but the side effects are so bad, many would just prefer not take the meds.

mental illness is a disease that insurance companies dont want to pay for and government kind of brushes aside.

Many of your homeless are mentally defect, and need help.

It's a sad thing, people will throw a family to the wolves, once mental illness is found.

He's stigmatized in his hometown now. Dad's relative prominent figure. Comes from a solid family background.

Yes. Many homeless people are ill, but I differentiate between people who smoke crack rock and think that the voices are telling them to jump off a bridge and people like him.

There's a girl who's similar to him. Visual and auditory hallucinations. No drugs. No alcohol. Not suicidal, though. Didn't lose all her money. Etc.

Most mental illness is a flaw in chemistry not character. The right meds can go a long way in helping this guy.

many of your homeless aren't crack heads

they are mentally ill people, who no one wanted to care for and let society deal with them.

He snapped out of it. He's on one med. He gained fifty pounds in six months on one of the meds. Was in pretty good shape. They took him off of it because of the weight gain.

He claims to have perfect memory of when it started. Extreme anxiety started happening spontaneously.

Its really sad what some people have to go through in life. We who have not have the "demons" in our minds can't understand their pain. You may be a bigger help to him in his struggle than you realize.

My experience is that most are habitual drug users. I'm not saying there aren't exceptions. There are.

One of the worst cases is a clean cut guy who started doing cough syrup. He's now classified as mentally retarded.

Mental health in this country is a huge problem but nobody ever discusses.

It's unfortunate that people with mental illness have to struggle to find adequate help. It's also unfortunate the judgement and ignorance society displays toward people with mental illness.
