So, if I read that right, the State money accounts for 13% of the budget and it will go down to 2.9%. In other words, they need to find 11% more money somewhere. That's gonna come from the middle/upperclass.

They need to treat TOPS sort of like a loan program. Dont finish? Pay us back. And increase gpa requirement. 2.0 or whatever is a joke

Not a bad idea and definitely increase the GPA requirements. As it stands now, a carrot could get TOPS.

Are these cuts really a possibility? If so what the frick?

No it is just scare tactics. The state money to LSU will get cut and LSU will go up on tuition and fees. The school will make some moves to try and be more efficient, but alot of the fat will still be there.

Even if the cuts to the LSU system were bad enough to cause campus closing do you really think they would close the main LSU campus?

“We’re looking at about an 82 percent budget reduction,” Alexander said of the 2016 state budget proposal, which has revenues falling $1.6-billion short of needed expenditures.

“In many ways, that ‘S’ isn’t as big as it used to be, because we’re only 13 percent funded from the state of Louisiana,” Alexander observed. “If this cut goes unaddressed in our legislative session, we will go down to 2.9 percent coming from the state.”
I'm guessing that the F. King System President fellow isn't a mathematician. How in the hell is a 10% budget cut going to force him to furlough half his employees and shut down the campus for a year?

Do the admins' salaries soak up 90% of the budget? If so, cuts aren't the issue...

Note how Jindal's bitch carefully omits any critique of the governor. Part of the deal with his secret hiring.

Can't believe any meaningful reform hasn't been done to TOPS. It's way overdue.

If you move out of Louisiana, you should have to pay back TOPS imo.

I had a professor in grad school - an LSU man, in fact - who used have a maxim: whenever someone starts using numbers and percentages to fill the holes in their argument, they're most likely full of shite.

For some reason, TOPS is treated like the golden child by politicians and anyone suggesting reform quickly gets shut down. So we accept carrots into the program and so much waste is created by not only people graduating and leaving, but also people dropping.

I'm sure a university has huge operating costs besides just paying people's salaries. And a 10% reduction in budget is substantial. Whether or not Alexander is using hyperbole is beside the point. The continued budget cuts to LSU and higher education in this state are unacceptable.

They sure haven't been blowing money on their website. I think I made one on AOL, back in the mid-90s, that looked better than that.

I have a buddy who works there. It's pretty bad, for sure, but the hyperbole is hurting his cause, not helping.

Easy. Give a 13% budget cut to each department and let them sort it out. Seriously.

This is what you frickers get for voting Jindal in just because he had purple and gold bumper stickers.
