Agreed. Me included. I'm just saying if you have the capacity to improve yourself, the capacity to elevate your life and your health, you should. If not for yourself, for your kids, who are watching your every move intently. That's why I quit smoking.

Well I don't disagree with you. The thing about weaknesses in people, is much of that can be hid from others. You can have an addiction to porn and not many people know about it, or an addiction to your cell phone, and that would be considered norm. The thing that makes smokers an easy target is, there is no way to hide that weakness, it is what it is. I'm just so glad I quit before this raging hard on from the general public about attacking smokers started. Again, most people started smoking young before they ever thought about having kids, then by the time they have them, it's too late. Especially for the father who didn't have to quit b/c of pregnancy. Yea, I know some mom's don't quit, but the majority of the one's I know quit when they got pregnant. Pretty much all my friends who had a parent who smoked it was just the dad, don't think I remember any who had a smoking mom. And believe me, many of the dad's tried to quit when wife gets pregnant. Sometimes the overall stress of having a kid can keep your from quitting in the first place. They need that crutch, hell, I needed it also. I waited for kids to calm the frick down, and then I quit.

i have a friend who told his son he was smoking a cigarette and not marijuana. his son asked what we were smoking and how it smelled funny, he said it was a cigarette. And that it was gross.

I am like - WHAT?

eta: I live in colorado where it is legal.

For a moment forget about the second hand smoke. I'd like to ask specifically about the example a person sets when they smoke in front of their kids. Does the parent say "I know I'm setting a terrible example for my kids, but I don't care...this is more important." Immediately I think of kids in front of a store waiting for mom or dad to finish smoking.

And yes the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's were different. This is 2016.

Like I've said, the vast majority of my friend's who had a smoking parent, don't even smoke, and wait for it, wait for it, actually still have a lot of respect for their parents!!

Someone playing on their phone and ignoring their kid is a pretty bad example also. All parents do things that are bad examples. Every single on of us. It sucks, this aint tv, it's real life.

With that being said my sister and I do not smoke even thou we were raised around it everyday of our lives.

My folks smoked till I was about 13-14? It DISGUSTED me. I never picked it up. I would refuse to touch them. My dad asked me to get him a pack of cigarettes ONE time. I opened them and pinched all the filters off a whole pack, closed the box back and handed it to him. Told him he needs to quit.

It revolted me so much that weed in high school and college was never an option. The act of smoking ANYTHING just disgusts me.

I always worry that I'm going to have health issues later in my life from growing up around smokers. Both my parents died from smoking related cancer.

None of my grandparents or aunts and uncles smoked, they either lived well into their 80s or are currently in their 80s, the ones that have passed away died suddenly, none had any long term illness. My parents both smoked, but quit in their 60s, after developing health issues directly related to smoking, both passed away at age 75. Not a scientific study, but I enough to make me concerned about the effects of growing up in a home with to smokers.

Or the parents who spend all day on their phones and ignore their kids 99% of the time. If I was a kid nowadays id rather have a dad spend time with me with a cig hanging out of his mouth then what I see with most parents now who can't even take their eyes off a phone.
.

^ this all day long. While tailgating I watch couple after couple staring at their phone not engaging, or even talking, with their children. Then I see ol baw with the Marlboro hanging out his mouth playing ball with his son and daughter, acting up, and laughing with his wife. As a kid, I'll take option 2.

Why not play ball with your son or daughter, then smoke when they're not around?

Most parents don't play ball with their kids anymore. What about parents who allow their kids to become obese at 5 years old? That's much more of a problem in my eyes.

More people's kids nowadays will die from accidents related to texting and driving than illnesses caused by second-hand smoke.

I'd be more concerned about parents who buy their children cell phones than parents who smoke in front of them.

Good lord, so basically 99% of kids who grew up in the 50s were abused b/c their parents smoked?

And the fact that such a low percentage of them ever got lung cancer or emphysema from the second-hand smoke tells you it is mostly fear mongering bullshite.

Hell, more kids today have asthma than ever before, I guess it is all of that clean air they are breathing at home now.
