Season 1 cost/budget = $4.4 million
Season 1 cost to Louisiana = $1.8 million
Season 1 cost for cast = $381 thousand

Season 3 cost/budget = $21 million
Season 3 cost to Louisiana = $12.9 million
Season 3 cost for cast = $6 million

"Add it all up and Louisiana will pay a little more than $6.2 million for the first 41 episodes of Duck Dynasty, and probably a good deal more once the producers submit their receipts for seasons four through six and beyond. After paying a mere $38,433 per episode when the show was finding an audience, state taxpayers are now kicking in $328,521 for each half-hour episode."

I was under the impression that these were tax breaks and not actually payouts

You're right. People like to think that not collecting the full amount of tax you could get is worse than not having a film industry at all and getting no tax receipts whatsoever from that industry.

They can sell their tax credits to people that owe taxes so yes, it still cost the state. If you owe $x in taxes then you can either write a check or buy tax credits for slightly less. Either way, the state subsidized the $$. Not here to argue the possible benefits of the movie industry credits but these guys went from zero to hero pretty quick - good for them..... But since JBE is shutting down LSU football and summer school and fill in the blank then maybe Willy and Phil could help keep a little league field or dog shelter open.
