Should kids be allowed to play on ipads/iphones at 2 or 3 years old?

I was at lunch today, and at the table next to use was a group of three adults and a kid who looked to be about 2 or 3. He was in a booster seat playing on an ipad while the adults chatted. I'm not a parent, but is this too young to be on an ipad? I know times are different, but when I was a kid at that age my parents gave me coloring books and stuff like that to occupy me. And it can't be good for a kids eyes to be staring at a screen all day. I know that the motto these days is, "Hey, whatever keeps the little bastard quiet.", but I was just wondering what others thought about this.

my kid has been fiddling around with an iPad since he was 3. Playing kids games, playing ABCmouse. Learning stuff. Now he's addicted to Lawn care video's on Youtube.

I'm not a parent so idk.

I will say that while I wouldn't just give them electronics all day to shut them up, I'm sure there are some informational/learning type games on there that would be beneficial for that age. In small doses of course.

An iPad is a way cooler coloring book.

I feel like I saw a Cracked article recently where studies have come out that basically say looking at a screen isn't much different than looking at anything else. It may have been more to do with sitting too close to a screen, but I thought the main point was that it won't hurt you.

I let my 3 year old watch kids shows on my ipad when there's something on TV that I want to watch. I always get mad at the people who let their kids do that in public though since they usually have it loud enough for the next 2 tables to hear whatever they are watching.

As a new parent, my immediate reaction and what I would say for my own kid is no.

Parents today give a kid an iPad or TV to distract them. They become addicted to the device and then have trouble being stimulated by less appealing things. If the parent were actually in control and monitoring it then possibly so but I know little kids that are in 3-5th grade that are absolutely lost indoors with out their iPhone or iPad in their hand. It's sad and frustrating.

Not the wisest thing you can do. It will get to that point where the kid will scream bloody murder when you try to take it away from him. Just need to set limits at the very beginning. Take it away when time is up and don't give any breathing room about it.

This is one of those "let me judge others though I don't know what I'm really discussing" threads

It's like people looking for something to get pissed or offended about

There should be limits to screen time. But there are studies supporting both sides of the argument. Raise your kids however you see fit and don't worry about other people's kids.

To follow up, I have no real problem in principle but keeping it from becoming more than 20 minutes a couple times a day is the hard part.
If your kids know and respect the word no, it won't be a big issue.

I've debated with this myself.

Do I let my child utilize the newest technology as early as possible or do I try to keep him away until a certain time because I'm afraid it could lead to dependence if allowed too early?

I'm not pissed or offended. Like I said: I don't have kids so I have no idea how that all works these days. Just getting opinions.

Don't ever begrudge a parent 20 minutes of being able to sit still and eat lunch...if a device does it, so be it.

I fricking WISH I'd have had a god damned iPad when our oldest was a toddler!!!

I have a 1 and a 2 year old. The 2 year old knows that the phone/pad holds music, pictures and videos for her to look at, but only when we sit with her and we decide when to shut it down.

Our 2 1/2 year old has played with the ipad and primarily iphone since I can remember. However, we do limit her time on it and do not use it as a babysitting device. There are learning tools, programs that she plays with on pbskids.org.

She can pick it up, unlock it and find the app she wants to watch or look at videos and pictures of herself. Literally operates the phone better than some adults.

To each to their own on how to raise their kid. Ours is just getting the head start on the technology futuristic world.
