I went to college and med school for less than $45k. WTH are people spending this money on. After scholarships and other academic rewards and loan paybacks, I paid $0 in tuition. We lived meagerly and had only some loans on my wife when we both graduated. After college and 4 yr pharmD she owed $32k.

No way man. The government is paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for everyone to major in African women and gender studies. Posters in this very thread have the IRS come to their door and have them cut a check for the guy next door who works at Starbucks. Trust me.

How bout if all you frickers pay your own way and we (taxpayers) quit subsidizing everyone? I shouldn't have to pay for anyone's education, except my own or my kids if I so choose.

Odd the OP is so arbitrary about what he thinks is a beneficial degree and what isn't. Or what leads to " direct employment". No real way to determine that.

Universities exist for the purpose of A&H. If you just want a job, there's this thing called a trade school.

The government is paying for bar tabs and spring break in Gulf Shores.

That's what I used my money on, anyway. No regrets. Had more fun than you thrifty idiots.

So what happens to the engineering student that fails out? His money could have been better used on someone like my wife. Your stance continues to fall flat on its face.

What don't you believe? There is a shitload of money flying around right now kids.

I had beers with an old colleague last week, he just quit his job to take a year off. Has two kids, wife is an investment banker. Psychology major, sales rep for a large reseller, 8 years in the game and he personally made $350,000 last year. He is thirty-two.

I have a friend that dropped out of a psychology program from a directional school. He is a channel manager in a firm, four years in the tech game, he is pulling down $175,000. He is 34.
After his connections got him in the door, nobody even asked about his degree, they just assumed.

Both of them are smart and charismatic, equipped with no technical acumen whatsoever.

Oh, I'm well aware, especially in tech fields. If you continue reading you'll see that I was just fricking with him.

what's wrong with that?

Because the price of college right now has nothing to do with degrees, employability, etc. so the inability of those students to pay for something that is now astronomically overpriced for EVERYONE is only because of free money for college in the first place. It was government intervention that drove prices so high, not just general college growth.

If you fix what caused the mess, and college cheapens, then this wouldn't be an issue. But that's a much harder proposition. Then your science degrees can be worth EVEN MORE and A &H won't be set back so hard, even if everyone remains stubborn in how they hire and what they think.

sex sells....IMHO, your wife could be different...sociology/psychology/LArts studies are chosen NOT because of interest in the field exactly, but more a response to the question... "which majors will I not have to take a bunch of Math in?"

The costs are irrelevant to the idea of subsidizing a student. You either do or don't subsidize them. Careful what you ask for.

Because 95% of jobs are much, much easier than people like to think they are. Even engineering. Outside of Law, Medicine and the Hard Sciences, it's really a wash. Even computer science is graspable if you have the time to work at it. And things like Network Security....your assessments and certifications count WAY more than a degree. Engineering, it's computer aided problem solving and project management. Any capable person who's given the right time and investment from a company, has the desire, drive, and interest in the area, can do 95% of jobs in this world.

You have never met anyone who has found Math intimidating? If you have, what was their major of choice?

I completely agree with this...we should just have accredited apprenticeships....they teach you the job.

then college can go to being ONLY Liberal Arts....as there are no apprenticeships in LGBT studies.

I find foreign language intimidating, so I took the easy way and got an engineering degree. I shouldn't have gotten any aid since I took the easy way out, right?

I despise math (advanced maths such as calculus). My major of choice is health information systems, I have a graduate degree and didn't borrow a penny to get it.

which language? Maybe Chinese?....well there are 1.5 billion Chinese speakers already....so no demand.....far fewer Engineering Speakers...so there's a demand....so you get funding to learn it.....tah-dah
