I've had to do it before for a dog that had been hit by a car. It's not pleasant but you do what needs to be done and go on.
(I was not in the car nor was it my dog. I just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. And the reason I did it was the poor dog was mangled, suffering, and the owner asked me to do it because the nearest vet was about 20 minutes away.)

My brother had to shoot one of ours when we were younger. I was away at school. It was a big arse Doberman and she had peed all over herself so he didn't want to put her in his car to bring to the vet.
Anyway, he had to dig a big arse hole then drug her into it and shot her. I thought it was kind of weird to not shoot her first, but maybe that's just me.
