Take the plate.

Report sale online at LA DMV website. You will need buyers name and address and DL #.

I did this two years ago and kept the plate. Renewed license about 6 months ago. No flags or issues.

When my husband was handling his late sister's estate, he and her daughters sold her car on Craig's List and didn't remove the tag.

It was a hassle, but once we had turned the car's number over to the DMV, and once they recorded it, then we could safely cancel the insurance.

TPTB were very understanding because of a death in the family, but Tennessee has always been easier to work with than Louisiana ever was.

You were all wrong, the lady at the title place did all the work, told me she took it out the system, and I can keep it.

You will not.

Just mark vehicle sold but keep insurance on it till it shows canceled in the system.

Always remove it.

One time I did not.

Several months later I got notices for speeding in California.

It was several phone calls and faxes to get them off of my back.

Even if I donate a car, I take the tag to the county office and get a record of me no longer owning the car.

Shouldn't it be the opposite?

In California the plate goes with the car, not the owner, so No, you don't remove it.

You absolutely have to turn it in.

Only exception would be a trailer with a permanent tag.

Under rated comment. Never, under any circumstances, throw out a trailer tag.

I know from first hand experience that in LA if you cancel your Insurance the dmv is notified. You have a very small window to cancel the registration/plate before they flag your license for having an uninsured registered vehicle.

So if you cancel the plate first, you won’t have the possibility of running into this problem.

ETA I work for an insurance company and I was dumb enough to sell an old jeep the same week I moved and forgot to cancel the plate once I cancelled the insurance. Got popped for a hefty fee when I renewed my license.

"You absolutely have to turn it in" is completely false. All you have to do is go to the OMV website (www.expresslane.org) and cancel it. You can keep it and make a birdhouse if you want. As long as you cancel it right away it doesn't matter what you do with it.

You can take it off and then sell it to the buyer for $10 and then you can save on gas money for not having to run to the DMV.

What planet are you from? Of course you leave the plate, it's considerate. You don't want to put the new buyer out.

Ok, so I appreciate that a ton of people on here are treating this like common knowledge, but this is news to me

I’ve never done a private sale, though. I assume the dealership takes care of it when you trade in? Or have I been fricking that up all these years as well?

You could probably make a couple of bucks on it by selling it in North Baton Rouge

In Louisiana, auto plates get pulled and cancelled online. On trucks (vans too, i think), you can transfer the plate with the vehicle, but you need to inform the dmv either way before you cancel insurance.
