I didn't know the pancreas could be transplanted.

The father of a friend of mine had a lung transplant. It didn't take, and he never got out of the hospital. He died after a couple of months of misery. The success stories are great, but they aren't all success stories.

LOL at healthcare transparency. First no one pays this. Honestly no one. This is what is charged not what is paid. Insurance companies have contractuals so they don't pay that. Those with no insurance will get a bill for that but won't ever pay. I would take the numbers you see there and multiply by 0.25 for a more reasonable estimate.

I can assure you that if you ever had a transplant, you would be dirt poor after. Like, sooooo fricked financially.

There's no way the whole poop shoot needs replacing. Probably more of a patch job. One cadaver body=patches for 500

It's small intestine transplant, you can live without a colon.

I've only seen small intestine transplant done in the pediatric population. Though I'm sure there are indications for adults as well. In the kids, for the more common indication of short gut syndrome you have to be able to transplant a substantial length in order for it to function properly, I.e. No patch job. Plus there's only a few centers who do this.

That's a decent hospital stretch. What surgeries were you in for?

Had to have bypass surgery. On the day I was supposed to be discharged, an unusual blood clot formed in my leg. It required a fasciectomy to relieve the pressure.

My aunt had a heart transplant 7 years ago and she's more than fine financially.

This exactly. Right now thanks to Medicaid expansion and no need for proof of insurability say I need a transplant tomorrow... I could go just buy insurance. Maybe not in LA but elsewhere. So in all likelihood no I wouldn't be poor.

I don't see the rates for head transplants, isn't that the new thing?
