If one can't be covered, just seems like you're screwed.

Nah, just the reduction. I'm tired of stepping on it.

Looks like you get a big discount for heart-lung together so if you're going in for one, you might as well get the other changed out.

LOL at healthcare transparency. First no one pays this. Honestly no one. This is what is charged not what is paid. Insurance companies have contractuals so they don't pay that. Those with no insurance will get a bill for that but won't ever pay. I would take the numbers you see there and multiply by 0.25 for a more reasonable estimate.

Who would've thought intestine would be the most expensive.

Are transplants typically covered under insurance?

The people who aren't covered are never the people who can afford it. It's just the way it works

A bargain if you do the heart and lung together instead of separately.

Why are intestines so high. Don't we have a million miles of poop shoot?

This. The hospitals waaaaay overcharge for everything on paper because a lot of insurances (and Medicare) cover a certain percentage (and it's pretty low) of what they're charged. So the hospitals jack up the rates so they get paid what they need to get paid.

For example, let's say a procedure costs a hospital $300 to perform. And Medicare pays only
30% of these types of procedures. The hospital jacks the rate up to $1000 so that when they submit the bill, Medicare pays them $300. It's a game.

But if you are not covered, and have to pay out of pocket. Can be a nightmare.

There's no way the whole poop shoot needs replacing. Probably more of a patch job. One cadaver body=patches for 500

The thought of having to have a transplant is much more sobering than any amount of money. Thanks for depressing me. I need Hernandez' guards to leave him and come watch me now.

I had an October 4, 2010-January 6, 2011 hospital stay with multiple surgeries where I owed about $8000.00 out of pocket when I got home.

That's a decent hospital stretch. What surgeries were you in for?
