This will cost the county (or whatever) money.

They will settle and there will be a payout.

I'm willing to bet that I'm right.

I need to run for office, I would change everything....

Higher standards for teachers
Drug testing for welfare
You pay if you lose a lawsuit, end frivolous lawsuits
Prostitution legal, make them register and get tested
Legalize weed and tax the frick out of it

Yes, but it really goes for anything. There may be liability and the family suffered damages. Why not sue? I would hope your family would do the same if something happened to you at your job, while you were in the custody of the police, at a hotel, etc.

Of course. This will never see a courtroom. Playing the tape of the traffic stop will see to that.
In addition, the burden of proof is much lower in a civil case, correct?

IOW, couldn't the jury find there was some contributing factors to her death?
For example, the family is suing for $2M. The jury finds the county was 25% liable, so the plaintiff is awarded $500K.

But everybody who checks "yes" to depression history or ever feeling suicidal? That's a shite ton of one to one and suicide smocks.

A reform of how psychiatric patients are treated to prevent suicide in jail or from shooting places up IS a valuable discussion. But nobody will have it. Blaming the dead is unsatisfactory. And reform is not possible. It's impossible to fund.

If the LEO would have been the least bit courteous and followed his training, even still making an arrest, the for the plaintiff case gets way, way weaker, IMO.

Since he had to be an a-hole (even if she was), the county will settle.

I'd sue too. People aren't supposed to be found hanging in their cells after sitting in jail for days for minor infractions.

You're the type who'd sue a fork for making you fat, a teacher for poor grammar, a gun manufacture for a suicide, and wildlife and fisheries if a deer ran out into the road and totaled your car.

What happen to the days of "guess she didn't want to live anymore and hung herself?" I don't trust many, but this media biased notion that a jailer, who can barely spell his name right and thats why he is a jailer, ran in and hung an detainee over a traffic stop is absurd.

I would support mandatory body cameras for welfare recipients. Then we could get the whole story.

The above cases are in no way similar to the Bland case.

if they indeed did do something wrong...my problem is the settlements. They are worth 10x more dead than alive.

It's not uncommon for jury verdicts to be pretty large in cases such as this, but lots are reduced on appeal.

If there is a settlement and the number is pretty large, that tells you something.

This.

Drawing the conclusion that this was a multi department murder conspiracy to murder a woman just for a traffic infraction and being obnoxious is foil hat thinking. There should be no gray area on autopsy for a hanging. You can't hang someone that doesn't want to be hung without tying them up or some struggle. If she would have taken a beating, any pathologist would find it. She had two autopsies, correct?
