Well I balked on it, so you can buy it out from under me if you'd like

Like fin said, I would have to probably quadruple my income to maintain my lifestyle in San fran. I doubt that would happen.

You might be able to buy a house for $84K in AL, but you won't have a tech job that pays you $250K either.

That $250K job is a whole lot less attractive when 33% of your pay is going to just rent. That's not even including the other high costs of living in San Fran.

I'm looking now too, and for 200 I'm looking at around that price for 30 year. I destroyed my credit while in college and it's been a climb ever since.

Or you do like most do and live right outside of SF and commute(that's what my starving artist brother does...lives in Oakland) I would imagine the rents are much cheaper in Oakland.

Or the CA state income tax that goes as high as 13%

The tech and design boom in the SF Bay Area is truly mind-blowing. The demand for housing spills over to communities that are a 1 or even 2 hour commute.

"Right outside" is probably an hour commute...minimum

That said if I got a 600k job offer in San fran I'd mull it over

When we drove to Fort Bragg we hit Oakland right at 5 pm on a Friday.....it was insane the rush hour traffic. Coming back we completely bypassed that whole area to avoid rush hour.

My brother says his commute is about 40 minutes from Oakland to SF..and that is all public transportation (he doesn't own a car)

Here in TX I pay $1538 on my 30 yr mortgage and that is without any PMI. You get used to the housing and property taxes real quick.

I couldn't do it.

It would take a half million a year minimum for me to move there, and I'd have to think long and hard about it.

Different strokes for different folks and such.

I'm just going to assume most people living in the city have roommates

not everyone living in San Fran is making $250k

Keep in mind, if the housing there is anything like it is in Manhattan, you're looking at buying a "no frills" 1 Br/1 bath ballpark 400k. That doesn't factor in common charges, property taxes, city personal income tax, or parking.

Its a big lottery. Some people make it big, but most won't, only driving up market demand in the process. Crazy IMHO.

Hmmm...AL vs CA. Let's see. You do realize that the people who actually pay that kind of rent also get paid salaries that allows them to do so? Let's just say that these folks choose to live in SF for the sheer job and career opportunities in tech that come with living there. You might be able to buy a house for $84K in AL, but you won't have a tech job that pays you $250K either. Different strokes for different people. Completely different economies and lifestyles

It's not as different as you might think. My company has a corporate office here and in SF and the cost of living differences in median salaries for the same position is only about 20-25% higher in SF.
