That's because the reportage wasn't there. Those that investigated it died pretty grizzly deaths.

So is it just saber rattling? Honestly I don't think strategically we could sustain a war with Russia. Russia would also bring China and Iran into the fold I would imagine. If we strain them enough economically, I could see them potentially trying to make one last push to get us out of being a dominate world power. Is it likely? No, but it seems like Putin has started pounding the war drum pretty hard lately:

I'd set the o/u on the US completely dominating the air and sea at two weeks. Any conventional army stands zero chance against the US

Completely dominating another world super power in two weeks? So a war would be over in a month. I admittedly have not read as much about our military and other powers, but I don't think it would be a quick walk in the park.

Other than China possibly taking advantage of the US being tied up in Europe to strike in order to finally take full control of the much contested Yellow Sea, I don't think there is a real chance of China forming an alliance with Russia similar to what was seen between Japan & Germany in WWII. More than likely China would remain on the sidelines and actually try to broker peace. China's whole economic foundation is built on cargo ships leaving China and oil tankers coming to China. If war came, the US Navy would lock down Chinese waters and cut China off from everything they need. Their goods could not be brought to market and the oil would not be able to reach their ports. In short, war for China would be very bad for business.

As for Iran, they're more suited for what they're doing now, allowing proxy terrorist organizations do their dirty work with insurrection type operations. As for Iran taking part in a conventional war against the US, they're woefully unprepared for such an endeavor.

Of all the things that could lead to a war between NATO and Russia, this is the thing most likely to trigger it.

Your imagination needs work.

Russia and China have been rivals for 50 years and continue to be.

Russia is so far behind the US in terms of military technology it's laughable. Thats including their recent attempts at modernization. Then you cut off their oil fields and it's over. Russia in its current state is no world power.

We can't afford a war in Afghanistan, what do you think another full blown Cold War would do to us?

His fiction is plausible?

Which part, where Japan invades U.S. territory using commercial airlines, where Prince Charles helps Jack Ryan subdue terrorists, or where we turn Jerusalem into a Vatican like state policed by Swiss Guards?

Yeah, almost like ripped from the headlines.

Putin's actions are similar to little kids that are around doing silly little shite to get on your nerves, simply for the sake of getting on your verves. Unfortunately, there is a majority of the citizenship in Russia who get that picture in their head of Putin riding on top of a Grizzly Bear like a boss when they hear about this.

Me, I think it's hilarious and at most, ballsy.

Comparative to other countries, they're not that bad off.

They've got their own oil... and lots of it.

While not on the same level as they were at the height of the Soviet Union, they're still very dangerous.

Only two fields I see being difficult are the Siberian ones. Russia may be dangerous to others, not to the USA.

The problem is it's not the US that Russia would ever try to attack directly, other than perhaps a nuclear strike in some sort of Armageddon situation that's highly unlikely. No, where Russia could strike is towards Europe. As things stand now, if you look at the Russian military and compare that to what NATO currently fields in Europe, there's a good chance if the Russians did decide to invade, they'd probably not be stopped before they reached Berlin. The NATO of 2015 is a shell of the NATO of the late 80's.

Russia is a huge threat to Europe which makes them a big problem also for the US.

The sun has set on the British empire. At least they still have some power projection capability. It's been a long time since the Falklands War and Thatcher's sabre-rattling.
